Jessica Alyssa Cerro (born 14 August 1995), who performs as Montaigne, is an Australian art pop singer-songwriter-musician.

Glorious Heights, her debut album, was released on August 5, 2016, peaking at No. 5 on August 5, 2016. On the ARIA Albums Chart, 4 of them appear on the Top 100.

She received the ARIA Music Awards of 2016 for her album Breakthrough Artist – In the album's debut, she was nominated for three other categories.

In April 2016, she was a featured vocalist on Hilltop Hoods' album, "1955", which debuted at No. 59. 2 on the ARIA Singles Chart.

Early life

Cerro was born in Sydney on August 14th, 1995, and was raised in the Hills District. Gus Cerro's father, a professional football player who competed in the Australian National Soccer League, as well as for Negeri Sembilan FA and Pahang FA in Malaysia, was a professional football player. Cerro has said that her "ethnic roots are a mash-up of Argentinian, Spanish, Filipino, and French."

Jessica Cerro, a Triple J Unearthed High School finalist in 2012 with her indie pop track "Anyone But Me," but she didn't wait until high school to pursue her music career. Cerro signed a publishing contract with Albert Music in November 2012 and spent the next two years refining her songwriting skills under Michael Szumowski's guidance.

Cerro decided to adopt Montaigne in late 2013, inspired by the 16th century philosopher and essayist Michel de Montaigne. Montaigne's debut EP with producer Tony Buchen was released shortly after she had completed her HSC (The Preatures, Andy Bull).

Montaigne's first single "I Am Not An End" was released in 2014 and was included on Triple J's top rotation. Montaigne signed a Wonderlick Entertainment management and recording contract in July 2014. She performed "I Am Not an End" on the radio station's Like a Version segment on November 21, 2014, as well as her interview of Sia's "Chandelier." The song was selected as its 36th most popular song of 2014. Montaigne's second single, "I'm a Wonderful Wreck," was released on the same day as her second single "I'm a Hero" on the Life of Montaigne EP. "I'm a Fantastic Wreck" received high exposure on Triple J and Sydney-based community radio station FBi Radio, which also listed the song as the country's eighth most played song of 2014.

Montaigne was chosen by San Cisco as the support act for their Run tour in November 2014. She was also selected by Megan Washington to be the main sponsor for her national There There tour in February 2015.

Montaigne received the Next Big Thing Award at FBi Radio in January 2015, which honors "the musicians, artists, restaurateurs, restaurants, and activities that influenced Sydney's cultural scene in 2014." Montaigne announced her first headline tour in February 2015 in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth.

"Clip My Wings," the first single from her debut studio album, "Glorious Heights," was released in August 2015. Montaigne's "For Your Love" was the lead single from her upcoming sophomore album in November 2018. She debuted "Ready" in June 2019, along with an announcement that the album will be titled Complex. "Love Could Be Found (Volcano)" was released on August 9, 2019. The album was released on August 30, 2019 and debuted at number 19 on the ARIA albums chart. Emma Thompson's "read" plays over the end credits of the 2022 film Good Luck to You.

Montaigne and fellow singer Didirri were announced as two out of ten participants in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, with the single "Don't Break Me" on December 6th. On February 8, 2020, she won the competition and will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam, but the EBU announced on March 18, 2020, the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 has been cancelled due to the confusion caused by COVID-19's spread. Montaigne wrote a Facebook post on March 19, 2020, expressing her disappointment. "I've had my cry." I spent a few hours in bed, contently scrolling through the numerous wonderful tweet messages from people expressing their love and care. I expect there will be a lot more cries in the next few days, for me and for the wonderful staff who were with me to make our vision come true." She said she agreed with the cancellation choice because it was "the most responsible and ethical decision that the EBU could have made." Montaigne will represent Australia in the 2021 competition on April 2nd, 2020, SBS announced on Thursday that she will represent Australia in the 2021 tournament. "Technicolor," Montaigne's Eurovision Song Contest 2021 entry, "Technicolour," was announced on 5 March 2021. On May 18, 2021, she participated in the first semi-final of Eurovision 2021, but she did not qualify for the final because she did not finish within the top ten nations. This was the first time an Australian contestant qualified for the final for the first time in Australia's participation. She had finished 14th in the first semi-finals with 28 points later.

The podcast My Brother, My Brother, and Me premiered "My Life Is Better With You," a track created and performed by Montaigne specifically for the show on March 15, 2021. Montaigne and the McElroy Brothers were officially launched on August 13, 2021, along with a YouTube video starring Montaigne and the McElroy Brothers.

Montaigne's lead single from her third studio album "Now (In Space)" was released on October 22nd, 2021. 2012–13: Career beginnings

Jessica Cerro was a finalist for Triple J Unearthed High School in 2012 with her indie pop song "Anyone But Me" but she didn't wait until high school to pursue her music career.
