Adam Duritz, the band's frontman, revealed that the song Mrs Potter's Lullaby, from the album This Desert Life (1999), was about an imaginary version of her that had never met. Duritz explains that serendipity led to them meeting (for the first time) for a casual supper with business associates the day before the band's recording of the song, and Potter returned to the studio with Duritz to watch them perform. They became best friends, and a tape he forgot to give her on the night of the recording resulted in salvaging the album, which the band felt they had lost during post-production and had to not continue to keep it.
