Makeup is for everyone, if the beauty industry has taught us anything over the past two decades. People of all genders, skin tones, ages, sexual orientations, and abilities are going to experience transformation, whether it comes from throwing on some red lipstick at work or creating a glitter cut crease for a TikTok tutorial. And, though makeup is mainly known as a visual medium, many in the visually impaired community are enjoying it.
"Society views beauty as a visual thing because that's how most sighted people experience beauty," says Molly Burke, YouTuber and content designer. Burke was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at the age of four and lost a majority of her vision by age 14. "I'm lucky that I'm as comfortable with makeup as I do without because I can't see myself." I don't do it because I love the way it changes my appearance, but I'm doing it because I love the self-expression and self-care components. Every morning, I love this; I take 20 minutes for myself to pamper my skin, my makeup, and find an outfit that will show the world how I am feeling the day"
