Mohamed Sissoko Life

Mohamed Lamine Sissoko (born 22 January 1985) is a professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder. Born in France, he may have wanted to play for France internationally but instead opted for Mali, France's national team.

Personal life

Sissoko is the nephew of former African footballer of the year Salif Keta, who, as Sissoko, played for Mali and Valencia CF. Salif Keita is also the uncle of former Barcelona midfielder Seydou Keita. Both Sissoko and Seydou Keita play similar roles as tough-tackling defensive midfielders. Sissoko is often referred to as "the Black Ninja" for his tenacious tackle and high work rate. He is Abdou Sissoko's older brother. He is the cousin of footballer Oumar Sissoko.

On the Dubai-based Arab television network, Al Arabiya, Sissoko said, "I am proud of being a Muslim and I watch Ramadan even during the football tournament."

Club career

Sissoko was a second striker in the French club AJ Auxerre's youth system.

Sissoko completed a free transfer to Valencia, Spain, operated by Rafael Bentez, where he was deployed in midfield. Valencia won the 2003-04 La Liga title and became the UEFA Cup champions in the same year, when Sissoko played nine games. Bentez was left to direct Liverpool in the following year, and Claudio Ranieri was recalled.

Sissoko's transfer from Valencia to Liverpool cost $5.6 million in the summer of 2005. In the UEFA Champions League qualifiers against Kaunas on July 26, 2005. After colliding with Benfica's midfielder Beto in February 2006, he sustained a serious eye injury.

Sissoko was a member of the FA Cup winning side in 2006 and was instrumental in the team's success. Sissoko declined invites from Barcelona, CSKA Moscow, and Juventus to stay on Merseyside in the summer of 2007. Liverpool's only goal came on August 25, 2007, a poor shot from twenty yards out against Sunderland in a 2–0 away victory.

Sissoko joined Italian club Juventus in January 2008, where he would team up with former coach Claudio Ranieri for a €11 million fee. In a Serie A match against Canton Calcio, he made his first appearance for the club in February 2008. He was inserted as a 67th minute replacement for Tiago. Sissoko scored his first goal for Juventus on March 2, 2008, the equalizer against Fiorentina. He was active in the starting lineup for Claudio Ranieri's 4–4–2 formation during the first half of the 2008–09 season, forming a friendship with youngster Claudio Marchisio. His season came early in March 2009 after he broke his foot in March 2009, leaving him out for the remainder of the year and the 2009–2010 season.

Sissoko's injury problems persisted throughout the remainder of the 2009–2010 season and into 2010, 2011, including thigh strains, Achilles tendon inflammation, and then season-ending knee surgery in March 2011.

If you registered for the Group Stage of the UEFA Champions League before September 2013, Sissoko transferred to Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain for a transfer fee of €7 million, plus €1 million. In a 1-1 draw against Bordeaux at the Stade Chaban Delmas, Sissoko scored his first goal for PSG in November, when he took a cross from Nenê. In April 2012, he captained the team against Olympique de Marseille in Le Classique, but was suspended in the 86th minute for two bookable offences in a game that ended 2–1 to the Parisian club.

Sissoko joined Fiorentina on loan on January 30, 2013. Sissoko left PSG by mutual agreement on September 3rd.

After going without a club for almost five months, Sissoko joined Levante in La Liga on a six-month contract on January 30, 2014. He was moved to Shanghai, China's Shenhua, on June 25, 2015, and was released on February 21, 2016.

He joined Indian Super League Pune City as a marquee player on October 1, 2016. He joined Ternana Calcio on a six-month deal in February 2017, but then he resigned just 25 days later.

He joined Mitra Kukar, Indonesian club side, on a one-year deal on April 13. Sissoko left Mexican side Atlético San Luis on December 2, 2017.

On July 4, 2018, a new record was established. Sissoko has joined Hong Kong's Premier League club Kitchee on a one-year contract. He resigned less than four months later in order to care for his father in France.

He agreed to a six-month deal with FC Sochaux-Montbéliard on January 16, 2019.

Sissoko announced his retirement as a player in January 2020.

International career

Born in Mont-Saint-Aignan, France, Sissoko was eligible to play for the France national team but decided against international football for his ancestral country, Mali. He received his first international call-up to the Mali national team in 2004 and then played for his country in virtually all African Cup of Nations qualifiers and tournaments since then. He has appeared in FIFA World Cup qualifiers for both 2006 and 2010. Sissoko made 34 official appearances for Mali, scoring two goals. He finished fourth in the 2004 African Cup of Nations and third in the 2013 African Cup of Nations, with Mali.
