Mo Kenney Career

Career

Kenney began recording their songs at a small recording studio on the floor of a non-denominational private school in Halifax, when they were 17. Joel Plaskett came to the school one day to discuss playing and recording music as well as listening to what they had discovered. Kenney, Plaskett's boss, received notice two years ago that they had been invited to Gordie Sampson's Songcamp in Cape Breton. Kenney began working on their first album with Plaskett in April 2011.

Kenney is now impressing reviewers with their ease and affable stage presence, despite being plagued by severe stage fright when first starting to perform. Kenney appeared in October 2012 and in May 2013 at the Great Escape Festival in Brighton, one of their most popular international performances to date.

Plaskett produced Mo Kenney's debut album, which was recorded in Dartmouth's Studio. In September 2012, New Scotland Records and Pheromone Recordings released the album. Plaskett co-wrote two of the album's songs with Kenney. The two of them are the only artists on the record.

The album was nominated for Rising Star Recording of the Year by the East Coast Music Association in March 2013.

Kenney's song "Sucker" received the SOCAN Songwriting Award for the best song by an independent Canadian musician in July 2013, sponsored by the Society of Composers, Authors, and Music Publishers of Canada. Kenney also received three Music Nova Scotia awards in 2013: pop album of the year, female artist of the year, and first artist recording of the year. At the Canadian Folk Music Awards, they were given a similar award, as the year's new/emerging artist of the year.

The awards for their debut album continued into 2014, when Mo Kenney received four ECMA award nominations, winning the award for best pop song of the year. Mo Kenney was also released in England, Ireland, and Germany in 2014.

Kenney released In My Dreams, Joel Plaskett's second album, which was also released by New Scotland Records and Pheromone Recordings in September 2014. For the second year in a row, Kenney's album was named the ECMA Best Recording of the Year. Kenney did a cross-country tour to promote In My Dreams' debut and then went on to perform on Joel Plaskett's Park Avenue Sobriety Test tour in the Spring of 2015, opening for Plaskett and his accompanying band on guitar and backing vocals for half of every show on the tour. In September 2015, My Dreams was published in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

The Details, their third album, was released on September 29, 2017. Kenney's "Ahead of Myself" was released in April 2019.

Kenney released Covers, an album of cover versions of songs by artists such as Patsy Cline, Daniel Romano, Stone Temple Pilots, The Kinks, Guided by Voices, Tom Petty, and The Magnetic Fields in 2021.
