MJ Hegar Life

Mary Jennings Hegar (née von Stein, 1976) is an American politician, Air Force veteran, businesswoman, and educator.

Shoot Like a Girl, which describes her service in Afghanistan, was released in 2017.

She also filed a lawsuit against the Air Force to eliminate the Combat Exclusion Policy.

In July 2017, she declared her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for United States House of Representatives in Texas's 31st congressional district.

She was defeated by 3% by incumbent Republican John Carter after winning the nomination.

On April 23, 2019, Hegar declared that she planned to challenge incumbent United States Senator John Cornyn.

Early life and education

Grace Hegar, Hegar's mother, moved her and her sister from Fairfield, Connecticut, to Cedar Park, Texas, when shegar was 7 years old. Hegar grew up in Cedar Park, where her mother remarried Vietnam veteran David Jennings when she was ten years old.

: 14–15

Hegar, the cheer squad's president, was a member of high school and competed in several sports, including soccer.

Hegar earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999, where she studied criminology, sociology, ethics, and world religions. She served as Vice Wing Commander of Detachment 825 AFROTC and Deputy Commander of the Arnold Air Society as an undergraduate. She graduated from Leadership Austin Essential Class in 2015 as a result. She received an Executive MBA from the University of Texas at Austin in 2016.

Personal life

Hegar married Brandon Hegar, who she recognized from high school, in 2011. She and her family live in Round Rock, Texas, a suburb of Austin. She has two sons as well as stepschildren from her husband's previous marriage.

Hegar has several tattoos, which were prominently featured in her 2018 viral campaign ad "Doors." The cherry blossom tattoo on her shoulder, she said, was a way to cover up shrapnel scar tissue, to take charge and make the wounds beautiful. During a physical examination, she mentions being sexually assaulted by an Air Force medic. The ad also addressed the domestic violence perpetrated by her father against her, her mother, and her sister during her adolescent years.

MJ Hegar Career

Career

Hegar was recruited into the United States Air Force in December 1999 by ROTC at the University of Texas. She served as an aircraft repair officer from April 2000 to March 2004. She was first stationed at Misawa Air Base in Misawa, Aomori, Japan, and was stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster, Missouri, later serving there. Hegar served on the F-16 Fighting Falcon and the B-2 Stealth Bomber at Whiteman. Her service career culminated in her responsibility for 75% of all B-2 maintenance as a Captain and the Company Grade Officer of the Year for 2003.

Hegar was chosen by the Air National Guard in 2004 for pilot training. She served two deployments to Afghanistan as a HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter pilot, as well as Medevac missions as a helicopter pilot after finishing her training at the top of her class. She served as a pilot and mentor with the San Jose-based Counterdrug Task Force from 2007 to 2011.

Hegar's services, as well as the deployments to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, have launched marijuana eradication missions, suppressed wildfires on cargo slings, piloted evacuation efforts in evacuating refugees from hurricane-ravaged cities and rescued civilians from humanitarian and rescue missions in California and at sea.

Hegar's third trip to Afghanistan on her third trip to Afghanistan, on her third trip to Afghanistan, was shot down near Kandahar with a co-pilot on a combat search-and-rescue mission. She suffered shrapnel wounds in her arm and leg from the Taliban ground fire, but her helicopter was able to rescue the soldiers who had been sent to assist. Her helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing due to more heavy fire. Other U.S. Army helicopters rescued her, her crew, and the other troops, but because the rescue helicopters were so small and heavy, she and others were forced to fly out standing on the skids.

In December 2009, Hegar was given the Purple Heart. She was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor Device in 2011 as a result of her efforts on this mission. She was one of the few women to receive this award after Amelia Earhart. In a TEDx Talks presentation in 2016, she discussed a 2007 effort to medevac a child in great detail.

Hegar was transferred from the Air National Guard to a Reservist Liaison due to the limitations of the Combat Exclusion Policy limiting women serving in ground combat roles, as well as a physical injury sustained during the 2009 mission.

Hegar moved to Austin in 2010 and spent as a program manager at Seton Healthcare Family until 2015. She served as a Dell Computer consultant from 2015 to 2017.

Hegar has worked at the University of Texas's McCombs School of Business and in the ROTC and women's studies departments. She has worked with cadets at UT and has served on the AFROTC Advisory Committee.

Shoot Like a Girl, Hegar's memoir, was published in Penguin Books' Caliber's March 2017 military division. The book's film rights had been purchased by TriStar Pictures, according to Angelina Jolie, who was apparently in talks for the lead role.

Hegar declared on July 6, 2017 that she would run for the Democratic nomination in Texas's 31st congressional district. She received the nomination in May 2018. Hegar's "Doors," a short-form political ad that referred to her military service, which also included being shot down in Afghanistan, was released in June. The video went viral and attracted the attention of celebrities like Lin-Manuel Miranda. She lost to Republican incumbent John Carter, who received 56% of the vote to her 47.6%, in the November election; it was Carter's only victorie in his nine election to Congress.

Hegar declared on April 23, 2019, that she would run for the Democratic nomination in Texas's 2020 state Senate race for the position held by John Cornyn. She came in first in the 2020 primary with 22.3 percent of the population, and she defeated Texas state Senator Royce West on July 14 in the primary run-off against Texas state senator Royce West, who had received 14.7% of the primary election.

Former President Barack Obama's campaign received Hegar's endorsement on September 25, 2020. Her campaign centered on her support for the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), safeguarding people with preexisting illnesses, and establishing a public health care option. Cornyn gained the election by 54% to 44%. Hegar received 4,888,764 votes during the 2020 election, despite the historic high turnout.
