Milt Buckner Life

Milton Brent Buckner (July 10, 1915-2007), an American jazz pianist and organist who popularized the Hammond organ in the early 1950s.

He introduced the parallel chords style that inspired Red Garland, George Shearing, Bill Evans, and Oscar Peterson.

Ted Buckner, Buckner's brother, was a jazz saxophonist.

Early life and career

Milton Brent Buckner was born in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. His parents encouraged him to play piano, but his parents died before he was nine years old. Milt and his younger brother Ted were taken to Detroit, where they were adopted by members of the Earl Walton band: trombonist John Tobias, drummer George Robinson, encouraged Milt and reedplayer Fred Kewley (1889–1953) adored Ted. Buckner studied piano for three years from the age of ten, and then began writing for the band in the 1930s, he and his brother went on to become active in the Detroit jazz scene.

Buckner first appeared in Detroit with the McKinney's Cotton Pickers and then with Cab Calloway. He joined Lionel Hampton's big band in 1941 and spent the next seven years as its pianist and staff arranger. Buckner appeared at the Cavalcade of Jazz festival in Los Angeles, which was hosted by Lionel Hampton on June 25, 1950. He had been with a short-lived big band for two years before returning to Hampton's in 1950. In 1952, he formed his own trio and pioneered the use of the electric Hammond organ. In the late 1960s, he appeared in Europe regularly. On July 4, 1977, he attended his last studio session in Paris. Milt Buckner is also known for the use of his song "The Beast" in the Battlefield: Bad Company's title menu.

Buckner died of a heart attack in July 1977, Chicago, Illinois, at the age of 62.
