Jonathan Ivo Vandenbroeck (Dutch) (born 14 July 1981) is a Belgian singer-songwriter who best describes himself as Milow; founded 14 July 1981). In 2006, Milow's debut album, The Bigger Picture, was released on his own label Homerun Records. "You Don't Know" the fourth single from the album, was one of Belgium's top hit songs of the year in 2007, and The Bigger Picture remained on the Belgian album chart for 109 weeks. However, Milow's second self-released album Coming of Age (in 2009 renamed and repackaged as Milow) was not until this period that Milow achieved major commercial success all over mainland Europe. The album debuted at number three on the German Album Top 50 chart, at number four in the Swiss Album Top 100, and in the top ten of many European charts, peaking at number three. The album debuted platinum in Germany and Switzerland, gold in France, the Netherlands, and Belgium, and Belgium, and it has sold over 500,000 copies in mainland Europe and Canada.
Milow's international breakthrough came with the release of the single "Ayo Technology," a song written and recorded by 50 Cent, Justin Timberlake and Timbaland's album Milow's Milow album "Mile." The single peaked at number one in the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Belgium, and Belgium, and Germany, Spain, Austria, and Austria, and Austria, and Finland, where it ranked in the top ten in France, Italy, and Finland. The show was a huge commercial success, winning a platinum award in Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, Denmark, and Spain and the Netherlands.
Early life
Milow was born in Borgerhout, Belgium, as the second of four children, with a Belgian father and a Dutch mother. He grew up in Wespel, Haacht, right next to Werchter, one of Europe's biggest annual rock music festivals. On the group's last tour, Milow said that his first concert experience was seeing Pink Floyd in Werchter in September 1994. The show prompted him to write his own music, and he was determined to perform on the festival site in Werchter one day. Milow grew up in a house full of musical instruments and began taking accordion lessons with a local music instructor as a child, but soon started taking piano and guitar lessons as well.
Milow spent a year as an exchange student at The Bishop's School, California, where he wrote and performed songs. In interviews, he has often said that this time helped him develop his writing skills in English, and that he always wished he would return to California. Jonathan decided to start playing solo gigs in 2003 after having performed in a few bands with classmates from high school and chose "Milow" as his artist name. Often asked why exactly that word was used, he has replied that there wasn't really a specific meaning; rather, he thought it would be more convenient for an international audience than his full name.
Milow was first heard at Humo's Rock Rally, Belgium's most prestigious battle of the bands in honour of unsigned rock bands, which is held every second year by Belgian publication HUMO. Many Belgian bands and artists, including dEUS, The Black Box Revelation, Absynthe Minded, Evil Superstars, Novastar, Arid, Admiral Freebee, and Goose, began their careers in the Rock Rally. Milow's debut earned him a spot in the finals, but he did not win.
Music career
Milow released his first album The Bigger Picture in 2005 alongside Nigel Powell (formerly of the British band Unbelievable Truth and now the drummer for Frank Turner). The Bigger Picture was first released in Belgium on Milow's own label Homerun Records in January 2006. "One of It," the album's first single, was released in November 2005 and received modest airplay on Belgian Radio Stations Studio Brussel and Radio 1. Despite some good reviews in the Belgian press, the album reached No. 1 in the Belgian charts. On February 4, 2006, I turned 65, but seven weeks later, it disappeared again.
De Standaard, a Flemish newspaper, gave Milow a column in their online edition, and Milow, a blogger from 2005 to 2009, posted on this blog called Off the Record about the ups and downs of being a DIY musician.
Milow's national breakthrough came with the introduction of a newly recorded single version of "You Don't Know," the first of what would be Milow's long-term project with producer Jo Francken. "You Don't Know" became one of Belgium's top hits in 2007, peaking at No. 2 after a slow start. In the Ultratop 50 single charts, there are three of them. The single's success led to The Bigger Picture re-entering the Top 100 Album chart in February 2007, with gold status and spending 110 weeks on the Belgian album charts.
Milow performed in the Pyramid Marquee on Rock Werchter on June 28, 2007, which began his life in Belgium. Milow received three awards at the first edition of the Music Industry Awards (MIAs) in Belgium: Best New Artist, Best Music Video ("You Don't Know"), and Song of the Year for "You Don't Know" at the end of 2007.
Milow's second album titled Coming of Age was released in the summer of 2007. Jo Francken, a Belgian producer, began working on his second album Coming of Age. According to the album liner, the majority of the album was recorded live over the course of three days with the assistance of some of Belgium's top musicians, including Tom Vanstiphout and Nina Babet (who both joined Milow's live band early 2008), and Ruben Block (Triggerfinger). The lead singles in Belgium Dreamers and Renegades and The Ride were Renegades and The Ride. On February 1, 2008, Milow's label Homerun Records in Belgium was published. It debuted at No. 1 on the Belgian Ultratop 100 album chart, placing it at No. 104. Milow reached the top of the charts on February 9th and remained at number one the following week, the first time Milow has ranked No. 6 on the charts. One of his albums has a 1 spot.
Something that had a huge influence on Milow's career came from a radio visit: Milow asked Milow to perform a cover song as part of a live session to promote the introduction of Coming of Age. Milow went for an acoustic guitar cover version of "Ayo Technology," a song written and performed in 2007 by 50 Cent, Justin Timberlake, and Timbaland. Milow began playing this cover during live performances and later released a single version with producer Jo Francken and guitarist Tom Vanstiphout. In September 2008, the single was first released in Belgium.
Perez Hilton took note of the video one day after it premiered online, saying it was "Better than the original." Kanye West explained why he shared the Ayo Technology video on his website in September: "I love the way Milow took the famous song and then completely flipped it." So, it's something I thought was a really cool feature to post on my blog." TIME Magazine published an article titled "The Short List of Things to Do" in the summer of 2009: "No. There is no reason to download a song in Belgium. But Belgian singer-songwriter Milow's acoustic interpretation of this 50 Cent track, slowly making its way across the Atlantic, converts Fitty's bawdy origins into a thrilling and dramatic ballad.

In a PRI's interview with a photographer, North and South means a nod to all the non-stop touring he has been doing, from Northern Europe to Southern Europe. "The Kingdom" from "North and South" featured lyrical references ("Where I am from they are divided between the North and South") as well as political divisions in Belgium between the country's Northern and Southern areas. Milow claims it's the first political poem he's ever wrote in an interview with PRI's The World.
