Early life

Brown was born in Marbella, Málaga, Spain, on February 19, the third of four children born to British parents Kelly and Robert Brown. She was born with partial hearing loss in her left ear and then progressively lost all hearing in that ear for many years. When she was four, she and her family returned to England, settling in Bournemouth; when she was eight years old, the family moved to Orlando, Florida.

Brown came into the public eye at the age of 12 after being cast in Stranger Things. Homophobic remarks attributed to Brown at 14 years old became popular on social media in meme style, prompting her to leave Twitter due to bullying. She has also faced social media users and journals sexualizing her in addition to online bullying. Brown made her acting debut in a series Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, a spin-off of Once Upon a Time, in 2013, portraying Young Alice. Madison O'Donnell appeared in the BBC America paranormal drama-thriller series Intruders in 2014. She appeared in the CBS police procedural drama NCIS, the ABC sitcom Modern Family, and the ABC medical drama series Grey's Anatomy.

Brown was selected to appear Eleven in Netflix's science fiction horror film Stranger Things in 2016. She has been lauded for her work in a Drama Series and was nominated for the Screen Actor Guild Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, as well as the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Contribution to a Drama Series.
