Millicent Mary Martin (born 8 June 1934) is an English actor, singer, and comedian who appeared on the BBC Television satire show It Was The Week That Was Unknown (1962–1963).

She received Tony Award nominations for Side by Side by Sondheim (1977) and King of Hearts (1978), both for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.

Gertrude Moon in the NBC sitcom Frasier (2000–04) and Joan Margaret in Grace & Frankie are two of her television appearances.

Personal life

Martin lived next to Abbey Road studios in the early 1960s. She was so close that she could sometimes hear musician George Martin chatting to the artists during a recording.

She was married to pop singer Ronnie Carroll from 1958 to 1965 and then to actor Norman Eshley, but both marriages ended in divorce. She has been married to American Marc Alexander since 1978 and is now a permanent resident of the United States.

Life and career

Martin was born in Romford, Essex.

Martin appears in early clippings from the Pantomime "Dick Whittington" in which Jimmy Hanley appears as one of the cast members and actress in "The Happiest Days of Your Life" at the University of Oxford in May 1951. Mrs. Margaret O'Neill appeared in "Mother Goose" at the Theatre Royal, Birmingham, December 1951.

She attended Italia Conti's theatre school, and not long after graduating from the academy, she made her Broadway debut in The Boy Friend in September 1954 alongside Julie Andrews. She remained in the show until November 1955.

In December 1964, she appeared as Tweeny in a musical interpretation of the Admirable Crichton with Kenneth More in London's West End, "Our Man Crichton."

Dorothy Brock was also known as Dorothy Brock in the original Broadway revival of 42nd Street in the 1980s, and she appeared on the revue Side by Side by Sondheim with Julia McKenzie and David Kernan in 1977, where she was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. She was given her second Tony Award for the musical King of Hearts (1978).

Martin appeared in Expresso Bongo at the Saville Theatre in London with Paul Scofield and James Kenney. She had appeared in The Crooked Mile in 1959. She appeared in The Card in 1975, as well as in West End.

Martin appeared in the Sondheim musical Follies in 1988, costarring Eartha Kitt.

She appeared in the Lerner & Lowe musical, Gigi, in 2008, more recently.

Martin was the resident singer of topical songs on the British weekly comedy show That Was The Week That Was (1962–1963). In 1964, Martin received the BAFTA Television Award for Light Entertainment Personality. In 1963, one of the show's favorites, John F. Kennedy's "In the Summer of His Years," was released as a single and 'bubbled under' the Billboard Hot 100 chart, which reached No. 46. In addition, she has released recordings in Swedish, including the 7" single "Om du nsin skulle dej."

Martin had her own BBC television show between 1964 and 1966, titled Mainly Millicent for the first two series, and Millicent for the third and final series. She received the Television Society Award for her role in this series. In one episode, Martin and guest star Roger Moore performed a comedy skit in which Moore portrayed shadowy agent James Bond long before he was cast in the role. In an edition of Juke Box Jury, she appeared alongside Pete Murray and Kenneth Williams in the mid-1960s.

In the 1960s, she appeared with Morecambe and Wise in their series "Two of a Kind."

Sir Lew Grade wanted to produce a comedy film series starring Martin that would appeal to both American and British audiences in 1969. Martin's six comedy sketches were sent to producer Sheldon Leonard, who came up with the idea of From a Bird's Eye View. The series was not a success and was cancelled after 16 episodes had been shot.

Julia McKenzie appeared in a gala version of BBC TV's The Good Old Days in 1977 to commemorate the Queen's Silver Jubilee.

During the second week of the show's longest running tournament, Martin appeared on the $100,000 Pyramid in 1987.

In 13 episodes of Moon and Son, a 1992 BBC detective series created by Robert Banks Stewart and co-starring John Michie, Martin appeared as Gladys Moon.
