Mikhail Pletnev Career

Life and career

Pletnev was born in Arkhangelsk, a part of the Soviet Union. His father played and taught the bayan, and his mother was a pianist. He worked with Kira Shashkina at the Kazan Conservatory for six years before joining the Moscow Central Music School, where he studied under Evgeny Timakin. He began studying under Yakov Flier and Lev Vlassenko in 1974 and became a member of the Moscow Conservatory, studying under Yakov Flier and Lev Vlassenko. He won the Gold Medal at the VI International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1978, which gained him international recognition and attracted worldwide notice. He made his United States debut the following year. He has also worked at the Moscow Conservatory. Sergei Rachmaninoff has been praised by Pletnev as a notable influence on him as a singer.

Pletnev was invited to perform at the superpower conference in Washington, D.C., where he met and befriended Mikhail Gorbachev. He received the support from this friendship to found the Russian National Orchestra in 1990, the first non-government-funded orchestra in Russia since 1917, and was the first principal conductor. He and the orchestra made their recording debut on Virgin Classics, releasing Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony and Marche Slave in 1991. In the late 1990s, he stepped down as Principal Conductor, but the orchestra's artistic director stayed on.

Pletnev has made several recordings with Deutsche Grammophon. His recordings are mainly of Russian works, though he did record the complete Beethoven symphonies in 2007. Tchaikovsky's The Sleeping Beauty, his Sixth Symphony and Manfred Symphony, and Rachmaninoff's Second and Third Symphonies were among his first works recorded for orchestra. Pletnev's recording of Tchaikovsky's First Symphony (Winter Daydreams) received critical acclaim.

Authorities in Thailand arrested Pletnev, a Thai national, in connection with charges of child molestation in July 2010. Pletnev, who was freed on bail, denied the charges. He cancelled appearances at the BBC Proms and Edinburgh International Festival in order to prepare his defense, but charges were dismissed on September 28th.
