Mike Westbrook Life

Michael John Westbrook (born 21 March 1936) is an English jazz pianist, composer, and author of orchestrated jazz works.

Early work

Mike Westbrook was born in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England, and grew up in Torquay. He went to art school in Plymouth after a spell in accountancy and his National Service (some of it in Germany). In 1958, he formed his first bands, followed by such artists as John Surman, Lou Gare, and Keith Rowe.

Westbrook formed many bands, big and small, and appeared regularly at the Old Place and Little Theatre Club in St Martin's Lane, London, 1962. Westbrook performed the role of house-band at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, along with Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath.

He played a key role in the emergence of British jazz, recording several big-band albums for the Deram brand from 1967 to 1969, with the newly formed Mike Westbrook Concert Band. These included Surman, Mike Osborne, and Harry Miller. The band spanned sizes from 10 to 26 players.

Malcolm Griffiths, Alan Jackson, Harry Miller, Mike Osborne, and John Surman made their international debut at the Montreux Festival in 1968.

His music appeared on BBC Radio, on the Jazz Club and Jazz Scene on BBC Radio One, and he began to perform as a host and commentator on new British jazz from 1968 to 1969. When Jazz Scene was transferred to the BBC 2 TV network, he appeared on BBC television. On Tuesday, the Ronnie Scott Club performed 'Metropolis,' based on Westbrook's impressions of first visiting London, at 20.45 from the Ronnie Scott Club. Westbrook was given a bursary to design 'Metropolis' for an expanded Concert Band, and the jazz suite was also seen on BBC Radio Three on Friday, January 9, 1970 at 21.00. During the 1970s and 1980s, Westbrook's compositions and performances were broadcast on the BBC regularly. On 3,4 and 5 August 1971, 'Metropolis' was recorded at Landsdowne Studios in London and became a RCA Victor in the United Kingdom and Japan. In March 1975, a new extended orchestral composition, 'Citadel/Room 315,' featuring saxophonist John Surman was released.

A number of different projects were undertaken in the 1970s. Cosmic Circus, jointly founded with John Fox, a composer on large scale, produces one-off high-tech shows involving high-divers, tightrope, carnival procesions, and others. It was part of the Earthrise Tour in the United Kingdom (May 1970 to October 1971). Norma Winstone, a singer/vocalist who appeared on several of the band's albums at the time, was included in this group.

For the Royal National Theatre, Adrian Mitchell drew Mike Westbrook on the life of William Blake. Mike Westbrook's career will be influenced by this article (see paragraph on later work).

He appeared in 1972 and 1973 for his jazz-rock band Solid Gold Cadillac. Phil Minton's presence had the most influencing role in this. In several of Westbrook's new ventures, his unmistakable voice would be prominent. Between 2002 and 2007, BBC Radio 6 has been broadcasting Solid Gold Cadillac (at the Paris Theatre in London) on a daily basis.

The Mike Westbrook Brass Band, avant-rock band Henry Cow, and folk singer Frankie Armstrong merged to form the Orckestra in March 1977. The ensemble appeared in London and several European cities, with their last concert being in Bordeaux, France, in May 1978.
