Michael Thalassitis (19 January 1993 – March 15, 2019) was an English Cypriot footballer and television presenter who appeared as a striker on television.

He was also known for his appearances on the third series of ITV2's reality show Love Island and the fourth series of E4 dating series Celebs Go Dating. Thalassitis joined Stevenage's Centre of Excellence in May 2011 after the club's promotion to the Football League was announced in May 2011.

In August 2011, he made his first-team debut.

Thalassitis joined Boreham Wood on loan in Conference South, returning to his parent club in January 2012.

He was loaned out again a month later after signing for Hayes & Yeading United on a one-month loan agreement.

Thalassitis was briefly loaned out to Cambridge United in September 2012, before joining Bishop's Stortford on loan two months later.

Boreham Wood's second loan spell at the club ended during the season.

Thalassitis joined Ebbsfleet United on a season-long loan ahead of the 2013-14 season.

Thalassitis appeared on the ITV2 reality series Love Island in 2017.

Thalassitis died in March 2019 at a park in North London at the age of 26. He retired from football in December.

His death was the result of suicide by hanging.

Club career

Thalassitis came from Stevenage's youth program prior to the 2010-11 season. In his first season with the club, he scored 17 goals in 26 games for the club's U18 team. He was granted a two-year professional deal with the club on May 18, 2011 as a result of his fine form during the season. Following the club's promotion to the Football League, Thalassitis was the first player to sign a professional contract with the club from the Centre of Excellence, which was "richly established." In Stevenage's 1–0 away loss to Milton Keynes Dons on August 27, 2011, Thalassitis made his competitive debut, replacing him as a 63rd substitute in the match. He made a "good run compel goalkeeper David Martin to tip his goal from the edge of the box into the bar," during the game, as well as missing the opportunity to return to parity in injury time.

In October 2011, Thalassitis signed a one-month loan agreement with Boreham Wood in Conference South. In a 3–1 home win over Dartford, he made his debut for the club a day after signing after scoring after 17 minutes. Thalassitis made five league appearances for the club during his first one-month loan period, when Boreham Wood won five straight victories, moving them from eighth place to eighth in the Conference South standings. On November 9, 2011, his loan term was a little longer. In Boreham Wood's sixth consecutive league victory, a 4–2 home win over Dover Athletic, three days later, Thalassitis scored a hat-trick on November 12th. Thalassitis returned to his parent club on January 4, 2012 after scoring five times in twelve games for Boreham Wood. He was loaned out for the second time during the season, and joined Hayes & Yeading United on a one-month loan contract on February 17, 2012. In a 4-1 loss to promotion chasing Wrexham, he made his debut for the club a day later, scoring a consolation goal in injury-time. In a 1–0 away win over Bath City, Thalassitis scored his only goal of the match three days later, netting with a header from goalkeeper Steve Arnold's long clearance. He scored once more during his time with Hayes & Yeading, scoring in a 3–1 away win at Forest Green Rovers, and played five games during his one-month loan spell. On March 22nd, Stevenage recalls him and continues to make two more replacement appearances for the team in the latter stages of the season.

In Stevenage's first game of the season, Thalassitis made his first appearance of the 2012-13 season, starting as a second-half replacement in a 3–1 home victory over AFC Wimbledon in the League Cup. In the next round of the tournament, he scored a consolation shot in injury time for Stevenage, losing 4–1 to Premier League side Southampton on 28 August 2012. Thalassitis had signed a three-year contract extension, and he would also be out on a one-month loan contract with Cambridge United. Thalassitis made just two appearances during the brief loan period, both of which were as a late replacement. He was loaned out in November 2012, his fourth loan spell of his career, and he was accepted on a one-month loan agreement at Bishop's Stortford in Conference South. Thalassitis' loan was loaned until January 2013, with him making eight appearances in all competitions during his two-month stint. Following his return from Stortford, Thalassitis was loaned out immediately, and Boreham Wood was on loan for the remainder of the 2012–13 campaign. In a 3–0 win over Hayes & Yeading on January 28, 2013, he began his second stint at the club by scoring the first goal. During his second loan spell with Boreham Wood, Thalassitis scored seven times in 19 appearances, winning back to Stevenage at the end of the season.

Thalassitis was loaned out to Ebbsfleet United, a championship South team, ahead of the 2013-14 season.

Thalassitis was released by Stevenage on May 17, 2014.

Thalassitis left Bishop's Stortford on October 30, 2015, and moved to Chelmsford City. In a loss to Gosport Borough on December 5, Thalassitis scored his first goal for the Clarets. Thalassitis joined Concord Rangers on January 2nd, 2016. Thalassitis left Concord on January 29th, 2016, less than a month after arriving in St Albans.

Thalassitis, a 27-year-old man from St Albans City, joined Margate on May 27th. Thalassitis joined Hemel Hempstead Town from Margate on October 26, 2016. Thalassitis joined Welling United from Hemel Hempstead Town on February 28, 2017.

International career

Thalassitis was called up to a three-day training camp with the Cyprus U19 team in December 2011, and she was later called up to represent the U19 side in March 2012. As they drew twice with the Georgia U19 team, he made two appearances for Cyprus.

Thalassitis was summoned to two games against Estonia in May 2012, just three days apart, with both games taking place within the space of three days. He appeared in 75 minutes of the first match, a 1–0 loss, before playing 60 minutes of the next match, which ended 0–0. He was selected in Cyprus' 21-man squad to travel to Denmark for the 2012 UEFA European U19 elite qualification competition. He had impressed during his time with Cyprus. As Cyprus finished last in their division, he started all three games.

Thalassitis was called up to the Cyprus senior side for the first time in May 2014 for their away friendly with Japan. However, he was unable to travel after a ruptured ACL during the last game of the season while on loan.
