Career
Stern grew up in Washington, D.C., and attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. He became a member of Blood, Sweat & Tears and spent three years with the band, appearing on the albums More Than Ever and Brand New Day.
He joined Billy Cobham's fusion band in 1979. Miles Davis made his public debut in 1981, and on the album We Want Miles, two years later. He stayed with Davis until he was replaced by guitarist John Scofield. Stern was a heavy drinker and heroin user at the time. "If Miles wants to put you in a rehabilitation, you know something wrong," he said in a 2009 interview. He went on tour with Jaco Pastorius from 1983 to 1984 (which was also marked by heavy drug use), and in 1985, he returned to Davis. Stern and his wife were in rehab; Michael Brecker and others assisted them in their recovery.
Upside Downside, Stern's solo debut, alongside Jaco Pastorius, David Sanborn, and Bob Berg, was released on Atlantic Records in 1986. He appeared on Don't Try This at Home from 1986 to 1988, as one of Michael Brecker's quintet. Peter Erskine on drums, Jim Beard on keyboards, Jeff Andrews on bass, Don Alias on drums, and Don Grolnick on organ were among his second Atlantic albums, 1988's Time in Place. Jigsaw, guitarist Steve Khan's tribute to Miles Davis, was included on his new album.
Stern formed a touring band with Bob Berg, Dennis Chambers, and Lincoln Goines in 1989. They remained together through 1992 and were included on the album Odds or Evens. Stern was a member of the Brecker Brothers Band for two years in 1992. Standards (and Other Songs), his 1993 album, inspired him to be named Best Jazz Guitarist of the Year by the readers and reviewers of Guitar Player. He followed it with Is What It Is and 1996's Between the Lines, both of which received Grammy Award nominations. With bassist John Patitucci, drummer Jack DeJohnette, percussionist Don Alias, and special guests Michael Brecker and David Sanborn, he created Give and Take in 1997. He received the Orville W. Gibson Award for Best Jazz Guitarist.
Stern, a former Atlantic Jazzman, has joined ESC Records for the 2004 release of These Times, an eclectic collection of recordings containing guest appearances by bassist Richard Bona, saxophonist Kenny Garrett, and banjoist Béla Fleck. He appeared on Who Let the Cats Out? in August 2006. He collaborated with the Yellowjackets on their Lifecycle album in 2008, contributing two books and appearing on most of the tracks, and the Yellowjackets performed on most of the tracks, and toured with the Yellowjackets in 2008 and 2009. Stern was named one of the 75 Great Guitarists of all time in February 2009 in the first of a series of articles commemorating Down Beat's 75th anniversary.
Stern's Big Neighborhood, a Grammy Award-nominated for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, was released in August 2009.
On January 21, 2012, he was given the Certified Legend Award from Guitar Player magazine. This was given to him at the Muriel Anderson All-Star Guitar festival, where he performed with Lee Ritenour. Les Paul, Duane Eddy, Dick Dale, Larry Carlton, and Tommy Emmanuel are among the many guitarists to win the award. Stern toured with guitarist Eric Johnson on the Eclectic Guitar Tour in 2014. They also produced an album under the same name.
After tripping and falling in the summer of 2016, Stern sustained serious injuries to his shoulders and right arm. It was the end of his European tour, and he had to adapt his playing style in order to keep playing. With Mike Stern/Randy Brecker Band, Randy Brecker (trumpet), Teymur Phell (bass guitar), and Lenny White (drums), he returned to Europe in the summer of 2017.
