Career
Posner started out as a record producer, playing on certain tracks with his hometown buddy Big Sean. A Matter of Time, Posner's second mixtape (the first mixtape being Reflections of a Lost Teenager) gained media attention in 2009. The Brain Trust, Don Cannon and DJ Benzi, were on the mixtape at Duke University in March 2009 under the banner "Mike Posner & the Brain Trust," referring to Posner's supporters. The product was unusual in that it was free on iTunes U, a channel intended for educational audio books. Despite the fact that Posner was not the only one to take advantage of this loophole, his debut was the most well-planned and high-profile, and attracted the most immediate response, landing at number one on the iTunes US chart and immediately securing the number one position. After his junior year at Duke University, Posner signed a record deal with J Records (RCA/Sony). He returned to Duke after signing, and toured on weekends as part of his debut album.
One Foot Out the Door, Posner's third mixtape, was released in October 2009. The mixtape was accompanied by a web series of the same name that aired bi-weekly from September to December. Posner began the tour on March 31 at the World Cafe in Philadelphia, before concluding at The Mint in Los Angeles on April 10. A hometown show in Posner's hometown Detroit, his first such exhibition in about two years, according to him.
