Playing career
Fisher grew up playing hockey in the Peterborough Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) with the rep Minor Petes program. In the 1997 OHL Priority Draft, he was drafted by the Sudbury Wolves from Jr. A Peterborough Petes (OHA) by the Sudbury Wolves in the second round, 22nd overall. Fisher was drafted in the second round, 44th overall, by the Ottawa Senators in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, after posting 49 points in 66 games in his first year with the Wolves. Fisher, who was returning to the OHL for one more season, scored 106 points, fifth highest in league scoring.
Fisher debuted with the Senators in 1999-2000 and scored 9 points in an injury-shortened 32-game rookie season. He began to play with an aggressive style of play and showed his penchant for offensive production as he increased to 18 goals and 38 points in his fourth season in 2002–03.
Fisher played abroad for EV Zug in the Swiss Nationalliga A during the lockout season of 2004-05. Fisher scored 22 goals and 44 points in 2005-06, providing valuable secondary scoring for the Spezza-Heatley-Alfredsson line as NHL play resumed. He helped the Senators advance to the first seed in the Eastern Conference going into the playoffs, but they were defeated by the fourth-seeded division rivals, the Buffalo Sabres, in five games in the second round. Fisher was nominated for the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the best defensive forward in the regular season, despite a career-high plus-minus (+/-) rating of +23. He finished second runner-up behind Dallas Stars Jere Lehtinen and trophy-winner Rod Brind'Amour, captain of the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes.
Fisher's goal total for 22 goals was the same as his previous one, with 26 assists and 48 points. Due to a left knee injury he sustained against the New York Islanders on December 27, 2006, he was limited to 68 games for the first four weeks. Fisher led the Senators to the 2007 Stanley Cup Finals, where they fell short of the Anaheim Ducks in five games. With 5 goals, 5 assists, and 10 points in 20 games, Fisher set a new record in playoffs.
Fisher re-signed with the Senators to a five-year, $21 million contract extension with one year remaining on his deal going into the 2007–08 season. He went on to set a career-high 23 goals for the season. In the final game of the regular season, Fisher was forced to postponed the playoffs after injuring his left knee cap from Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mark Bell.
Fisher suffered another knee injury against the New York Islanders on November 17, 2008.
Fisher was traded to the Nashville Predators in exchange for the Predators' 2011 first round draft pick (Stefan Noesen) and a conditional pick in 2012 (Jarrod Maidens). If the Predators win a playoff series, the Senators will get a third-round pick and a second-round pick if the Predators win two or more playoff series. The Predators won their first round of playoffs, but they lost their second round match to the Vancouver Canucks, losing to the Senators in third round, despite having a third-round pick. Although many trade negotiations were involved, Ottawa GM Bryan Murray and Ottawa owner Eugene Melnyk had opted to accept Nashville's bid so that Fisher could be closer to his wife, country singer Carrie Underwood, according to Fisher.
In a 5–3 victory over the Colorado Avalanche, Fisher played his first game with the Predators on February 12, 2011 and had an assist. He scored his first goal as a Predator five days earlier against the Vancouver Canucks on February 17.

After Shea Weber, the previous captain, was swapped to the Montreal Canadiens for defenseman P. K. Subban, Fisher became the sixth captain of the Predators on September 7, 2016. He led the Predators to the 2017 Stanley Cup Finals, before losing in six games to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Fisher announced his retirement from the NHL on August 3, 2017 in a letter sent to Predators fans on the day's The Tennessean, making him the first Predators captain to resign with the team.
Fisher said on January 31, 2018 that he intended to end his retirement to help the Predators make another Stanley Cup appearance. Fisher said he would train with the Predators and eventually sign a deal before the trade deadline, February 26, 2018. Fisher agreed to a one-year deal with the Predators on February 26, 2018.
Fisher retired for the second time on May 12, 2018, just a few days after the Predators were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs by the Winnipeg Jets.
