His parents, who are born in Lebanese, are a husband and father of an Israeli-born American father (Michael Holbrook Penniman III and Dorothy Dyar), along with John Mouakad's daughter and Lebanese father (Moannie Farah). His father, Mika's paternal grandfather William Frederick Penniman III, was a diplomat, and he was born in Jerusalem. John Mouakad, Mika's maternal grandfather, was Syrian (from Damascus).
When Mika was a year old, his family was compelled to leave war-torn Lebanon and move to Paris, France. Joe Dassin's first piano work to play was "Les Champs-Élysées." He wrote his first song, "Angry," which he describes as "awful" at the age of 7.
The family lived in Paris for seven months until Mika's father died in 1990 while the US embassy was stranded. When the elder Penniman returned home, he had to start a new job, which meant a move to London.
When Mika was 9 years old, the family moved to London. He attended Lycée Français de Gaulle, where he suffered a lot of bullying and had dyslexia. Mika was home-schooled by his mother and trained in music by Alla Ardakov (Ablaberdyeva), a Russian opera specialist. He worked with the Royal Opera in London and made his stage debut in Strauss' Die Frau Ohne Schatten at the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden.
Mika returned to school and attended St. Philip's School in Kensington, where he was the conductor of the Schola Cantorum (the St. Philip's Choir).
