Michiel Huisman (Dutch pronunciation: [mixil ysmn]; born 18 July 1981) is a Dutch actor who has appeared in both Dutch and English-language television series and films. Sonny Jones appeared in the fantasy romance film The Age of Adaline (2010–13), and Dayton Naharis on Game of Thrones (2014–16) and Steven Crain on The Haunting of Hill House (2018), as well as Dawsey Adams in the film The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. In the first season of The Flight Attendant (2020), he has appeared on television, including Liam McGuinnis on Nashville (2012-14), Cal Morrison on Orphan Black (2014-15) and Alex Sokolov on Nashville (2020).

Huisman began his career on Dutch television in the Dutch soap opera Goede tijden, slechte tijden (1998). He appeared in De co-assistent (2007–10) and Bloedverwanten (2010), as the Dutch film Costa! (2001) and Full Moon Party (2002), as well as leading roles in Phileine Says Sorry (2004) and Floris (2004). In addition, he was also involved in the development of Black Book (2006). Huisman appeared in the early years of his stage career as a member of a band called Fontane.

Huisman's first international acting appearance came in 2006, when he guest-starred in an episode of the British TV series Dalziel and Pascoe. He appeared in The Young Victoria (2009), World War Z (2013), Wild (2014), The Invitation (2015), and The Age of Adaline (2015).

Personal life

Huisman was a guitarist and guitarist in the Dutch band Fontane, which he formed with Roland van der Hoofd, Gilles Tuinder, Bas van Geldere, and Donny Griffioen. "1+1=2" (2001), "Slapeloos" (2002), and "Nee Me Mee" (2003) were among the band's singles. The first single appeared on the soundtrack of Costa's film Costa! (2001) and the second were on the soundtrack of a Full Moon Party (2002), both in which Huisman appeared in a leading role. Willeke Alberti's "Telken Weer" was also recorded for the movie Love to Love (2004) soundtrack.

Fontane broke up and Huisman decided to pursue music on his own after two members of the band broke up. "Deel Van Mij" (2004), "Geef Je Over" (2005), and Luchtige Verhalen (2005) as a solo artist, were among Huisman's singles released. "It doesn't seem like a new start to me, but as if I've started right now." Huisman said in an interview about his solo career: "It's personal and closer." The album's sound also influenced it."

Huisman began his acting career with a supporting role on Goede Tijden, Slechte Tijden, the country's longest-running soap opera, where he portrayed Rover, a 14-year-old model who accuses his employers of participating in child pornography. He appeared in Paul Verhoeven's 2006 film Zwartboek, which was the most commercial Dutch film of all time.

Huisman made his first foray into international acting in 2006 with a supporting role in an episode of British TV series Dalziel and Pascoe. He continued his role as Ernest II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in The Young Victoria, and the BBC made-for-TV drama Margot in which he played Rudolf Nureyev. Sonny, a Dutch busker who plays keyboards and guitar, joined the main cast of HBO's Treme as Sonny, a Dutch busker who plays keyboards and guitar. Davis Rogan taught him piano in New Orleans. Huisman appeared in World War Z, an apocalyptic action film, and began recurring as Liam McGuinnis on Nashville during his time on Treme.

For the fourth season (2014) of Game of Thrones, Huisman replaced English actor Ed Skrein in the role of Daario Naharis. For the fifth season (2015) of the series, Huisman was promoted to series regular. Cal Morrison, a strong outdoorsman who crosses paths with the clones, appeared on Orphanage's seasons 2 and 3.

Huisman appeared in the Academy Award-nominated biographical drama film Wild in 2014 and was cast in Chanel No. 5's The One That I Want, directed by Baz Luhrmann, and starred in the advertisement campaign for Chanel No. 5's The One That I Want. Huisman co-starred in The Invitation and appeared in the fantasy romance film The Age of Adaline in 2015.

Huisman was in the lead role in The Ottoman Lieutenant, a war-drama that tells the story of a Turkish officer (Huisman) who falls in love with an idealistic American nurse portrayed by Hera Hilmar during World War I. Josh Hartnett and Ben Kingsley appear in the film as well as Josh Hartnett and Ben Kingsley. In December 2016, the film was announced for an Oscar-qualifying run before being released in March 2017.

In 2016, Huisman appeared in the Discovery Channel limited series Harley and the Davidsons, which told the story of Harley-Davidson Inc. The three-part series premiered in September 2016 and received scathing feedback from critics and Harley-Davidson themselves.

Huisman appeared in The Haunting of Hill House, a Netflix horror film based on Shirley Jackson's 1959 book of the same name. The 10-episode story, which was published on October 12, 2018, is a modern re-imagining of the original story, now focusing on a family of seven. Huisman is a writer who writes supernatural books. He's played Steven Crain, the eldest sibling who became a published author of supernatural books, as well as a biography about his family's time at Hill House. The series was produced and executive produced by Mike Flanagan, writer, produced, and executive produced. Huisman appeared as an Israeli agent in Netflix's film The Red Sea Diving Resort in 2019.
