Michel Hazanavicius (born 29 March 1967) is a French film director, producer, screenwriter, and film editor best known for his 2011 film, The Artist, which received the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 84th Academy Awards.

Life and career
Hazanavicius was born in Paris. His family is Jewish and comes from Lithuania. His grandparents immigrated from Poland and Lithuania and then settled in France in the 1920s. Hazanavicius worked in television, starting with the Canal+ channel, where he started as a director in 1988. He started directing commercials for companies like Reebok and Bouygues Telecom, then produced his first feature-length film, La Classe américaine, for television in 1993. Dominique Mézerette's film was entirely made up of footage from various Warner Bros. films re-edited and dubbed into French. Hazanavicius produced his first short film, Echec au capital, in 1997, and followed it up with his first theatrically released film, Mes amis, which starred his brother, actor Serge Hazanavicius.
Hazanavicius wrote and directed his second film, OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies, a parody of 1960s spy films and particularly of OSS 117, a popular character created by Jean Bruce in 1949. With $23 million worldwide sales, the $17.5 million film was a modest box office success. OSS 117: Lost in Rio, followed by 2009 OSS 117: A sequel. Both films were later released in the United States by Music Box Films. In competition at the 2011 Cannes International Film Festival, Artist, a black and white film without dialogue that takes place in Hollywood on the eve of a sound film, was screened in competition. The artist was later discovered to international acclaim. On January 24, 2012, Hazanavicius was nominated for three Oscars: Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. "You don't really believe it will ever happen" if you win an Oscar, Hazanavicius said. At the 84th Academy Awards, Hazanavicius received the Academy Award for Best Director for The Artist. In June 2012, he and 175 others were invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
He was in charge of a segment of Jean Dujardin's omnibus film The Players (Les Infidèles) in which he appeared. He then confirmed that his next feature film would be a remake of the 1948 Fred Zinnemann film The Hunt.
