Michel Camilo Career

Background and career

Camilo was born into a musical family, and as a young child, he displayed an affinity for the accordion given him by his parents. Although he loved the accordion, it was his grandparents' piano that ignited his curiosity the most, so at age 9, he begged his parents to buy him one. Their first request was to enroll him in the Elementary Music School, a part of the National Conservatory, and then grant his wish a year later.

Camilo was taught by the formal structure of the music academy to perform in the classical style, and by age 16, he was playing with the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic. In an interview with All About Jazz, Camilo discusses his first encounter with jazz.

Camilo studied at the National Conservatory for 13 years, and although he wasn't interested in classical music, Herbie Hancock's bebop tradition, Chick Corea, and Amilton Godoy (Zimbo Trio's pianist). Horace Silver, Erroll Garner, and Scott Joplin's ragtime music were among his influences at this time.

The Harvard University Jazz Band toured the Dominican Republic and heard Camilo at a jam session, and the bandleader encouraged him, 'You should be in the US,' and the theory was born. Camilo moved to Mannes College and The Juilliard School in 1979, and then moved to New York to study at Mannes College and The Juilliard School, gaining acclaim in 1983, when Tito Puente's pianist was unable to perform a solo at the Montreal Jazz Festival. Puente asked Camilo to play on a suggestion, but not knowing him. Pacha de Reedman Pacha was in the audience and offered him a seat in his band. Camilo toured internationally with D'Rivera for four years and released two albums with him.

Camilo's rise as a celebrity in his own right began around 1985, the year he debuted with his trio at Carnegie Hall. He toured Europe with Pamelo D'Rivera's quintet and released Why Not? for Japan's King label in the same year. Anthony Jackson on the bass and Dave Weckl on the drums were included in his album Suntan/In Trio. Camilo made its debut on a major record label, Sony, with the introduction of Michel Camilo, a best-selling album that has remained at number one for ten weeks in a row. Special guests, such as percussionist Sammy Figueroa and tap dancer Raul, joined Camilo. Other best-selling albums followed, as did the awards, including a Grammy and an Emmy. In the first Latin Grammy Awards, Camilo's collaborative 2000 album with flamenco guitarist Tomatito Spain was named Best Latin Jazz Album.

Camilo is a gifted writer and has written scores for several Spanish language films, including Los Pesos de Nuestra Vida and the award-winning Amo Tu Cama Rica.

Camilo tours extensively throughout Europe, the United States, and Puerto Rico's Conservatory of Music. He has obtained numerous honorary degrees, a visiting Professorship, and a Doctorate at Berklee College of Music, as well as being named a Knight of the Order of Christopher Columbus and receiving the Silver Cross of the Order of Duarte, Sanchez & Mella.
