Michael Robert McDonald (born (1991-01-15)January 15, 1991 in Modesto, California, United States) is a retired American mixed martial artist.

McDonald competed in the Bantamweight division of the UFC, where he challenged for the interim UFC Bantamweight Championship at 22 years of age.

He also competed in the Bantamweight division of Bellator MMA before retiring following another hand injury.

A professional fighter since 2007, McDonald fought mostly in regional promotions in his home state of California before signing with Zuffa in 2010.

Career

McDonald began working in kickboxing at the age of ten, moved to mixed martial arts at 13, and became a pro at 16 in 2007. He also has two brothers who work in mixed martial arts. Justin Smitely, his older brother, is now signed with Bellator MMA. With the Last Stand Fight Team, he trains at Oakdale Mixed Martial Arts. McDonald graduated from Grace M. Davis High School in 2009, where he was voted Best Athlete and Most Likely to Succeed.

He won on the regional circuit over WEC veteran Manny Tapia and former WEC Featherweight Champion Cole Escovedo. McDonald regained his first professional defeat, which also earned him the Tachi Palace Fights Bantamweight championship with a second-round KO. He was ranked as one of the best rising stars under the age of 25 in the summer of 2010.

McDonald, who was 19 years old at the time, became the youngest fighter on the Zuffa roster when he signed with the WEC in September 2010. In his first round submission on November 11, 2010, he defeated Clint Godfrey in his first round debut.

World Extreme Cagefighting merged with the Ultimate Fighting Championship on October 28, 2010. All WEC fighters were moved to the UFC as part of the merger.

At UFC Fight Night 24, McDonald was supposed to face Nick Pace on March 26, 2011. Pace was forced out of the match due to an injury and replaced by promotional newcomer Edwin Figueroa. McDonald was awarded by unanimous vote in the fight. Both fighters exchanged strikes and submission attempts throughout the entire fight, earning Fight of the Night awards.

At UFC 130 on May 30, 2011, McDonald defeated Chris Cariaso, who had been injured Norifumi Yamamoto. He won the fight by a split decision.

McDonald was supposed to face Johnny Eduardo on November 19, 2011 at UFC 139. Eduardo was dismissed from the card due to an accident and replaced by promotional newcomer Alex Soto, however. McDonald defeated Soto via first-round KO, bringing Knockout of the Night awards to him. McDonald clipped Soto with a counter right hand and then swarmed Soto with a flurry of punches against the fence, causing the referee to call the match just 59 seconds into the first round.

On April 21, 2012, McDonald defeated former WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Angel Torres. He defeated the opposition in the first round by knockout.

Dominick Cruz, the UFC Bantamweight Champion, had rejured his ACL requiring surgery and will be out for six to nine months, according to UFC President Dana White on December 4, 2012; it was announced on December 4, 2012. McDonald met Renan Bartamweight Champion Renan Baro on February 16, 2013 at UFC On Fuel TV: Baro vs. McDonald. McDonald was competitive with strong take-down defense and crisp boxing, particularly in the first two rounds, but eventually succumb to Baro's more versatile skillset as he mixed in knees and kicks standing together in take-downs. At 3:57 of the fourth round, Baro claimed an arm-triangle choke, prompting McDonald to be dismissed.

McDonald took on Brad Pickett at UFC Fight Night 26 on August 17, 2013. He dominated the first round, nearly killing Pickett with strikes before winning a second round with a triangle choke. McDonald's win also earned him his first Submission of the Night award, and he and Pickett received the Fight of the Night bonus award as well.

On December 14, 2013, McDonald faced Urijah Faber at UFC on Fox 9. Faber stunned McDonald in the second round with a flurry of punches, but McDonald pushed Faber to the ground and ended the game by submission due to a guillotine choke.

McDonald returned from being hospitalized for all of 2014 and 2015, including hand and wrist reconstructions, to face Masanori Kanehara on January 2, 2016, UFC 195. After nearly being stopped by an arm-triangle choke in the preceding sequence of the fight, he won the fight by submission in the second round. McDonald also received his first Performance of the Night bonus award because of his success.

On July 13, 2016, McDonald would meet John Lineker at UFC Fight Night 91. He was disqualified in the first round due to his knockout.

McDonald revealed on March 16, 2017 that he was with the UFC because they were treating him "very dishonestly and disrespectfully." McDonald signed a Bellator MMA contract on March 24, 2017.

McDonald made his promotional debut against Peter Ligier on December 15, 2017, at Bellator 191. He was the winner of the fight by a unanimous decision.

On July 13, 2018 at Bellator 202, McDonald will next meet former Bellator Bantamweight Champion Eduardo Dantas. He won the fight by knockout in the first round. McDonald lost his hand in the match, leaving McDonald doubting whether his career would continue.

On September 27, 2018, McDonald announced that he would have dropped out of professional MMA competition.
