Michael Viner Life

Michael Ames Viner (VEE-n) was a film director and record designer who later moved to book publishing and became an innovator in the audiobook industry.

A percussion break in the album of the Incredible Bongo Band's "Apache" (a group he formed in the early 1970s) has been frequently integrated into many hip hop albums.

Early life

Viner was born in Washington, D.C., son of Jeanne (née Spitzel) and Melvin Viner. Viner attended the Chadwick School in Palos Verdes, California, majored in English at Harvard University, and studied at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. He was a consultant on Robert F. Kennedy's 1968 presidential campaign. Viner began his entertainment career in the mail room at Twentieth Century Fox; after Kennedy's assassination, he worked for film studios and operated a unique division for MGM called Pride. He was the producer of President Richard Nixon's inaugural ball in 1973.
