On April 2, 2005, Evans defeated Daron Smythe in the Pro Wrestling Express (PWX) Brass Knuckles Championship. Following the title defeat, Evans challenged Brandon K for the territory's Heavyweight Championship on September 8, 2006, but was disqualified. He competed for Price of Glory Wrestling, a Coldwater Michigan-based company, where he competed in an elimination match won by N8 Mattson later this year.

Evans has also competed for several Cleveland, Ohio-based promotions. Evans made his debut in March 2006 in Ohio, working with Kato to beat Chris Kole in a handicap match. Evans faced Robby Starr for the MEWL Championship in December but was disqualified, putting the game on hold. Starr defeated Evans again in a rematch in March 2007. Evans did not win the MEWL Heavyweight Championship at Honky Tonk Saturday Night the following month, but not before that. Evans defeated Savage at an Absolute Intense Wrestling (AIW) show in July 2006. In May 2007, he returned to AIW, losing to Thrillbilly, and in September 2007, where he stunned Eddie Kingston by submission in the third round of their 'Strong Style' Challenge match. In April 2007, Evans qualified Jason Bane for the Cleveland All-Pro Wrestling (CAPW) Television Championship but was disqualified. The B.E.T. received the B.E.T. on May 6 at Meltdown, B.M. (Elvans and Josh Emmanuel) defeated Jeff Brooks and Kid Hybrid in a tag team match, and the following month at A Hot Summer's Night The B.E.T. Defeat The Clash of Ernie Ballz and Brian Bender.

Evans debuted for Pro Wrestling Unplugged on October 27, 2007, making his debut as "The Panther" Tyrone Evans before losing to The Sandman by disqualification. Evans lost once more to The Sandman in December before changing his name to "Black Panther" in February 2008. Do or Die: Do or Die?

Evans signed a WWE deal in 2008 and was assigned to Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), a WWE developmental territory. In Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s match against the Big Show, he appeared as one of the body guards for him at WrestleMania XXIV. Tyrone Jones, a ring name in FCW, was used to wrestle under the ring name. He and Atlas DaBone feuded in May. He battled Kevin Kiley and TJ Wilson throughout June and July, and on July 21, he lost a dark match to Jamie Noble before going to Raw. He gained Byron Saxton as a manager and changed his name to Tyson Tarver in September. He became a member of The Saxton Conglomerate, a group made up of Tarver, Black Pain, Stu Sanders, and led by Byron Saxton. Tarver lost to Johnny Prime Minister Kafu and Sinn Bowdee in his first match with the Conglomerate on October 30, where he, Pain and Sanders lost to Johnny Prime, Kafu, and Sinn Bowdee. The Prime Minister soon became dissatisfied with the Conglomerate, and Tarver lost in a singles match on November 20. Tarver and Sanders lost to Prime Minister and Kaleb O'Neal on December 18, who were surprised by the octagon and neal.

Evans changed his ring name to 'Michael Tarver' in 2009. He continued wrestling in FCW throughout the 2009 season, fighting wrestlers like Wes Brisco and Skip Sheffield, with whom he feuded in November 2009. Tarver became involved with Heath Slater in December, appearing in Slater's matches and accompanying him to the ring. Tarver began a feud with Titus O'Neil the following month. Tarver defeated O'Neil twice in a singles match on February 18, beating him twice.

Tarver was one of the eight FCW wrestlers to audition on the first season of the NXT show on February 16, 2010, with Carlito as his storyline mentor. Christian and Heath Slater defeated Tarver and Carlito in a tag team match on February 23, the first episode of NXT. Tarver won his first match in the first Pro's Poll, beating Daniel Bryan after six more losses and being ranked second to last in the first Pro's Poll. Tarver denied to address any of the rookie challenges in NXT, claiming he was not available to do menial duties. Tarver was disqualified in the first elimination round of NXT alongside Daniel Bryan on May 11, because the pair lacked the confidence to continue playing in the sport.

One NXT rookie interfered in the main event match between John Cena and CM Punk on Raw, attacking Cena, Punk, the announcer and ring announcer, before turning heel on the process. When it refused to give them contracts, Raw the rookies (excluding Daniel Bryant) slammed GM Bret Hart. Vince McMahon fired Hart during the week, announcing of the addition of a new General Manager after the seven season one NXT rookies were drafted. The Nexus company was founded in The United States this week.

The Nexus played in their first match together, without Darren Young, defeating John Cena in a 6–on-one handicap match on July 12th edition of Raw. The Nexus continued to compete with Cena and the Raw roster, resulting in a seven-on-seven elimination tag team match at SummerSlam, which saw former Nexus member Daniel Bryan, who aligned himself with Team WWE, return to action. Tarver was the second person to be barred from the game after being pinned by John Morrison, and The Nexus then lost the match. Tarver was assaulted by Cena on the October 4 edition of Raw, with Barrett later claiming that he would have thrown Tarver out of The Nexus anyway, but Cena did him a favor. This storyline was created due to Tarver's suffering a groin injury.

Tarver recovered from his injury and defeated Donny Marlow on December 9 FCW television tapings. Tarver first appeared in the background of backstage segments on both Raw and SmackDown in 2011. However, nothing would have come of this, and Tarver had been suspended from his employment as of June 13, 2011.

He began wrestling under his real name after his release but then reverted to Michael Tarver. Evans made his debut in Florida's Underground Wrestling. Tarver defeated Eddie Taurus on March 3, 2012, becoming the first FUW Bruiserweight champion. During his time as champion, he faced Kahlon for the NWA National Heavyweight Championship, but lost. Tarver took the vacant NWA Heavyweight Championship on February 2, 2013 and would eventually lose his Bruiserweight Championship to Bruce Santee a month later. Evans defended the title against TNA wrestler Robbie E. Tarver on May 25, 2013. Tarver defeated Matt Morgan to win the NWA FUW Heavyweight Championship on February 21, 2014 at The Silver Screen Showdown. However, Tarver lost the championship two weeks later at Ides of March to Wes Brisco, but not before that.

Tarver will make his pro-Wrestling Alliance (NWA) debut on January 6, 2014, in Hiroshima, New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). Tarver defeated Hiroyoshi Tenzan in his first match. Tarver and fellow NWA representative Big Daddy Yum-Yum were teamed with Big Daddy Yum-Yum in an NWA World Tag Team Championship number one challenge, where they were defeated by Tencozy (Tenzan and Satoshi Kojima).

Tarver made his first wrestling appearance after being banned from WWE, where he began his five-year involvement at Florida Underground Wrestling. After defeating Eddie Taurus on March 20, 2012, he took the FUW Bruiserweight Championship. He won the vacant NWA Heavyweight Championship against Deimos on February 1, 2013 against Deimos, before losing the title against The Grease six months later on August 31 in a Brass Brass Knuckles On A Pole match. During the NWA FUW's December 12, 2013 edition, he defeated fellow WWE fan Wes Brisco. Tarver played in a Four-Way match in Hard Knock Wrestling for the HKW Championship, pitting fellow challengers Kombat Kidd and Patrick Hayes.

Tarver, Mason Ryan, and Shaun Ricker competed in a trios tournament on September 5, 2014 at Full Impact Pro Fallout. However, the Impact Puerto Ricans had a landslide (Lince Dorado, Jay Cruz, and Jay Rios) but were ruled out completely by the Rios. Tarver took the ring with Martin Stone under the team name MSL Universe on January 9, 2015. They won their first match, defeating Team Generation Genesis (Jeff Boom & Mitch Mitchell).
