Michael James Romeo (born March 6, 1968) is an American guitarist and a founding member of the progressive metal band Symphony X. He is one of two players to appear on every Symphony X release (the other being Michael Pinnella). According to Guitar World, Romeo was ranked #91 out of 100 Greatest Heavy Metal Guitarists of All Time.
Early life
When Michael Romeo was ten years old, he began formal music lessons. He also played clarinet. However, it wasn't until after hearing his first Kiss album that he seriously considered moving to the guitar that he seriously considered switching to the guitar. At a garage auction, he ended up buying a cheap acoustic guitar.
Since listening to Ozzy Osbourne's Blizzard of Ozz and Diary, he became serious about the guitar. Randy Rhoads, Ritchie Blackmore, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Uli Jon Roth, as well as well-known composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Richard Wagner, and Igor Stravinsky were also heavily influenced by his neoclassical technique and style.
