Michael Longley Career

Life and career

Michael Longley, one of twins, was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to English parents. Longley studied Classics at Trinity College, Dublin, where he edited Icarus. He served as the Ireland Professor of Poetry from 2007 to 2010, a cross-border academic journal established in 1998 by John Montague, Nuala N. Dhomhnaill, and Paul Durcan. Harry Clifton succeeded him in 2010 as the Prime Minister of the United States. Wake Forest University Press has published North American editions of Longley's books.

Over 50 years he has spent a significant amount of time in Carrigskeewaun, County Mayo, which has influenced a lot of his poetry.

Edna, his wife, is a writer who writes about modern Irish and British poetry. They have three children. Sarah Longley, the couple's daughter, is an artist. Longley, an atheist, describes himself as a "sentimental" disbeliever.

He appeared on BBC Radio 3's Letters to a Young Poet on January 14, 2014. Leading poets wrote a letter to a protege, inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke's classic text Letters to a Young Poet. Longley has published excerpts from his poetry for the Irish Poetry Reading Archive (UCD).

Peter, Peter's twin brother, died in 2013/14. Longley devoted the second half of The Stairwell (2014), his tenth collection, to him.

POETRY

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 27, 2022
POETRY: The art of the mundane, the invisible, the everyday, according to Judge Dana Poirier. It's the true art of the people.' The rather straightforward assertion is quickly contradicted by the state and sales of modern poetry, much of which exudes exclusivity as if it were a catwalk piece rather than for any of us. Michael Longley's work was not as good as it should be (pictured). He is as secure as a great poet as he can write poems of simple, pellucid beauty, affecting universal life at 83 years old. The Slain Birds (Jonathan Cape, £12) takes its name from Dylan Thomas' line, 'For the sake of the souls of the slain birds sailing'. A tawny owl was killed by a car and discovered by his two grandchildren in Longley's first poem.
