Michael Learned Career

Career

Olivia Walton appeared on The Waltons, either film or television, for nine seasons from 1972 to 1981. She was billed as "Miss Michael Learned" for the first five seasons of the show because she was relatively young at the time and producers wanted to avoid confusion among viewers about her gender. Producers' fear of her sex had been reduced during the show's fifth season, and "Miss" had been stripped from Learned's bill. She was nominated for six Emmy Awards as Lead Actress in a Drama for three times. After the conclusion of the sixth season, she decided to return for one more season on the understanding that she would not have to work the full nine months. She left the program after the seventh season.

Olivia's sudden disappearance was explained by her mother's emergence from tuberculosis and the opening of a sanatorium in Arizona. She made occasional guest appearances before the show's cancellation and then appeared in four of the six Waltons reunion films made during the 1980s and 1990s. Learned was nominated for four Golden Globe Awards for her portrayal of Olivia Walton. Will Geer, a Walton co-star on Learned and The Waltons, appeared together in the 1974 made-for-TV film Hurricane.

Learned appeared in Nurse Mary Benjamin's hospital drama Nurse, which aired on CBS for six episodes in spring 1981 and later in 1980, 1981-1982. Despite being well-received on television, the series was not a ratings hit and only lasted for a few seasons. Nevertheless, Learned was nominated for two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in 1982, and she received yet another Emmy for her work in 1982. She appeared in the illustrious 1988 drama Hothouse and 1989 sitcom Living Dolls, as well as a number of television movies and reunions in the 1990s.
