Michael Herr Life

By The New York Times Book Review, the book was rated as the best "to have been written about the Vietnam War."

"The best book I have ever read on men and war in our time," novelist John le Carré said. Herr later was credited with inventing the literary style of the nonfiction book, as well as writers such as Truman Capote, Norman Mailer, and Tom Wolfe.

Michael Herr Career

Life and career

Herr was born in Lexington, Kentucky, the son of a jeweler, and he grew up in Syracuse, New York. His family was Jewish. He appeared nowhere from 1971 to 1975 after being involved with Esquire in the 1960s. In 1977, Ted Nugent, a writer, went on the road with rock and roller Ted Nugent and chronicled his encounter in a 1978 cover story for Crawdaddy magazine. He also published Dispatches in 1977, upon which his fame largely rests.

Herr was credited in the film for narrating Francis Ford Coppola's 1997 film The Rainmaker's narration. He had previously contributed to Coppola's 1979 film Apocalypse Now's narration. He co-wrote the screenplay for the film Full Metal Jacket (1987) with director Stanley Kubrick and author Gustav Hasford. The film was based on Hasford's novel The Short-Timers, and the screenplay was nominated for an Academy Award. Herr worked with Richard Stanley on the original screenplay for the 1996 film The Island of Dr. Moreau, which was based on the H.G. Wells novel of the same name. Stanley, on the other hand, claims that the following rewrites cost Herr his writing reputation, omitting the bulk of the text written by the two writers.

Herr wrote two papers about Stanley Kubrick for Vanity Fair, which were later integrated into the short book Kubrick (2000), the director's personal biography. He declined to edit Kubrick's last film Eyes Wide Shut (1999).

Mr. Served with his wife Valerie in Delhi, New York, until his death on June 23, 2016, at the age of 76.
