Michael John Harney is an American actor, television, and theater performer.

Sam Healy, the SAG Award-winning Netflix original series Orange Is the New Black, is his best known for his role as Corrections Officer Sam Healy.

Early life

Harney, a native of New York City, went on to study with actor William Esper and Phil Gushee, both of whom worked and taught with Sanford Meisner at The Neighborhood Playhouse School Of The Theater for many years. After studying acting for 7 years, he went on to work with The Michael Harney Acting Studio in New York City for 8 years. Harney appeared in and/or directed more than 80 plays and one film, as well as being on On The Waterfront on Broadway as Charlie Malloy.

Career

Harney has appeared in several blockbuster films, including Erin Brockovich and Ocean's Thirteen, throughout Harney's television career. Harney played Detective Mike Roberts in the award-winning television drama NYPD Blue and also as Steve Fields in HBO's historical drama series Deadwood before appearing on Orange Is the New Black. Harney began working with Orange Is The New Black creator Jenji Kohan on the showtime original dark comedy Weeds, starring Mary-Louise Parker as Detective Mitch Ouellette.

Harney returned to his film roots in Bad Hurt, the independent drama that had its world premiere at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival. Bad Hurt chronicles Ed Kendall's (Harney) struggle with PTSD as a proud war veteran and father to his son (Theo Rossi) and physically impaired adult daughter (Iris Gilad), as well as the challenges each of them faces in their continuing quest for a healthy family life.
