Michael Rex Giles (born 1 March 1942) is an English drummer best known as a co-founder of King Crimson in 1969.
He was also co-founded the short-lived Giles, Giles, and Fripp with his brother, Peter, and Robert Fripp the previous year, prior to King Crimson's establishment.
Life and career
Giles was born in Waterlooville, Hampshire, England.
His drumming style is both complex and polyrhythmic, based mainly on the jazz style, but also on the then-burgeoning progressive rock style. In the Court of the Crimson King, his playing influenced much of the first King Crimson album's compositional structure. Giles' aural ear is evident by his ability to weave seamless tempo shifts and subtle melodic variations into his drumming throughout the album.
In December 1969, Giles and Ian McDonald left King Crimson, although Giles appeared on the band's second album, In the Wake of Poseidon, as a session singer. McDonald and Giles was a younger styled album than King Crimson's but it was also technically demanding. Giles performed as a session player for the remainder of the 1970s, appearing on albums by Anthony Phillips, Leo Sayer, and Kevin Ayers. He appeared on McDonald's 1999 solo album Driver's Eyes.
Progress, Giles' sole album, was recorded in 1978 at his home studio, but not until 2003.
He co-founded the 21st Century Schizoid Band, a group made up of former King Crimson musicians, with the exception of Jakko Jakszyk, guitarist and singer, who later joined King Crimson. Giles gave the drum stool to Ian Wallace, a former King Crimson drummer, after one studio session and a single tour.
Michael Giles' MAD Band, along with Adrian Chivers and Dan Pennie, formed an experimental group focusing on improvisation in late 2008.
Rush drummer Neil Peart used him often as an influence.
