Michael Joseph Fulmer (born March 15, 1993) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball (MLB).

He won the American League Rookie of the Year Award in 2016, and was an American League All Star in 2017.

Career

Fulmer attended Deer Creek High School in Edmond, Oklahoma. He went 10–2 with a 0.72 earned run average (ERA), 127 strikeouts, and also reached.436 with six home runs as a senior. Fulmer has committed to play college baseball for the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Fulmer was drafted by the New York Mets in the first round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft. He made his professional debut with the rookie league Gulf Coast Mets in which he had a 10.13 ERA and 10 strikeouts in three starting appearances and one out of the bullpen.

Fulmer played 21 games for the Savannah Sand Gnats in 2012. With a 2.74 ERA and 101 strikeouts over 108+13 innings, he went 7-6 for the year. Fulmer was rated as the Mets seventh best prospect prior to the 2013 season. He appeared in only nine games during the rookie leagues and the Class A Advanced St. Lucie Mets due to injuries. He had a 3.33 ERA and a 3-3 record with 42 strikeouts. Fulmer began with St. Lucie in 2014 and spent the year with the Binghamton Mets. He appeared in 20 games, going 6–11 for a 4.38 ERA and 87 strikeouts.

The Mets traded Fulmer and Luis Cessa to the Detroit Tigers for Yoenis Céspedes on July 31, 2015. Fulmer was named the Week of the Week for the week ending August 9, 2015. During that time, he appeared in two games for the double-A Erie SeaWolves, establishing a 2–0 record with 11 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. He led the league in strikeouts (11) and tied for the top in wins (2) and ERA (0.00). Fulmer was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year on August 28, 2015, and he was named as the starting pitcher on the Eastern League All-Star team. Fulmer's record in 22 starts for Erie and Binghamton was 10.24 ERA with 125 strikeouts. After the season, the Tigers welcomed him to their 40-man roster.

Fulmer was traded to the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens by the Tigers on March 18, 2016. Fulmer was called up and made his major league debut against the Minnesota Twins on April 29. Fulmer won in his debut in his debut, with two earned runs over five innings and striking out four in a 9-2 Tiger victory. Fulmer was off to a great start at Comerica Park in Detroit, where he surrendered only one earned run and total 11 strikeouts over seven innings, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays. Fulmer was the first Detroit Tigers rookie pitcher to strike out 11 opponents in a single game since Pat Underwood in 1979. Fulmer no-hit the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for 6+2/3 innings before losing a two-out single in the 7th to C. J. Cron on June 1st. Over 7+2/3 innings, he managed to get two hits and no runs. Fulmer tossed six scoreless innings against the Toronto Blue Jays on June 6, allowing only two hits against the Toronto Blue Jays. Fulmer became the first pitcher in Tiger history to pitch three consecutive outings of six innings or more while still allowing three or fewer hits.

Fulmer pitched six scoreless innings against the New York Yankees on June 12, but only two batters were allowed. Fulmer became the second pitcher in Major League history to pitch four consecutive outings of six innings or more, while still allowing three or fewer hits, as seen by Jake Arrieta. Fulmer's scoreless streak ended at 33+1 innings on June 17, beating John Hiller's previous record of 28+2/3 scoreless innings. Orel Hershiser scored 32 scoreless innings in 1984, but fell short of Fernando Valenzuela's all-time record of 35 consecutive scoreless innings. Fulmer pitched seven scoreless innings against the Tampa Bay Rays on July 1, yielding only two hits and striking out ten. Fulmer was the first Tigers pitcher since at least 1913 to allow one or two runs in eight straight starts.

Fulmer's first appearance in a major league complete game and first shutout against the Texas Rangers on August 14. With an 11-07 record, 3.06 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 132 strikeouts in 159 innings pitched, he closed the 2016 season. He had the lowest left on base percentage of all major league pitchers, stranding 66% of base runners.

Fulmer was named the Sporting News AL Rookie of the Year by a panel of experts, finishing ahead of Tyler Naquin and Gary Sánchez and being named the Major League Baseball Players Association Outstanding Rookie of the Year. Fulmer was also named in the Baseball Writers' Association of America's AL Rookie of the Year Award, receiving 26 of the 30 first-place votes.

Fulmer was 9–6 in the first half of the 2017 season, his first American League All-Star pick. Due to right elbow ulnar neuritis, he was put on the 10-day disabled list on August 3. No ligament damage was found on an MRI. Fulmer was reactivated from the DL on August 14. Fulmer will need elbow surgery for ulnar nerve transposition, ending his season on September 11. He ended 2017 with a 10–12 record, 3.1 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 114 strikeouts in 164+2nd innings.

Fulmer was placed on the 10-day disabled list on July 20 after pitching to a 3–9 record prior to the 2018 All-Star break, with a left oblique strain. After allowing two home runs on five pitches in his last game of the season against the Cleveland Indians, he left the game without recording an out. Fullmer underwent surgery on a torn meniscus in his right knee on September 20. He had a 3.69 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 110 strikeouts in 132+13 innings during the 2018 season. His ERA, WHIP, and hits allowed per nine innings (8.7) were all career highs.

Following a wage arbitration hearing, Fulmer was signed to a one-year, $2.8 million contract by the Tigers on February 15, 2019. Fulmer's elbow pain during a bullpen session was reported by the Tigers on March 19. Fulmer revealed on March 20 that he will have Tommy John surgery and miss the entire 2019 season.

Fulmer's one-year, $2.8 million deal was agreed to by the Tigers on January 6, 2020, so they did not have to worry about arbitration. Fulmer was medically cleared to participate in full time in the Tigers' postponed (July) spring training for the 2020 season. Fulmer was called to the Tigers' opening day roster on July 23. He played in a "opener" role, pitching about three innings per start before he advanced to more pitches. Fulmer made a 0–2 record with 8.78 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 27+2/3 innings pitched for the 2020 Detroit Tigers, compiling a 0–2 record with 8.78 ERA and 20 strikeouts.

The Tigers and Fulmer signed to a one-year, $3.1 million deal on January 12, 2021, avoiding arbitration. Fulmer will debut the 2021 bullpen in the bullpen on March 26, according to Tigers general A. J. Hinch. Fulmer was promoted to the starting lineup after suffering with Julio Teherán's injury. As the Tigers defeated the Houston Astros 6–4, he got his first 2021 start on April 14, allowing two runs and three hits over five innings. Fulmer was soon back to the bullpen, winning by extra-innings over the Boston Red Sox on May 6, his first career save. Fulmer appeared in 52 games (48 in relief), totaling 5–6 runs, 1.97 saves, 21 games played, and 73 strikeouts in 69+223 innings.

Fulmer agreed to a one-year, $4.95 million deal with the Tigers on March 22, 2022, avoiding arbitration.

Fulmer was traded to the Minnesota Twins for pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long on August 2, 2022.
