Michael Fassbender (born 2 April 1977) is an Irish-German actor.

In 2007, he appeared in numerous stage plays as well as television dramas, including in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers (2001) and the Sky One fantasy drama Hex (2004–05).

He first came to prominence for his role as an IRA campaigner Bobby Sands in Hunger (2008), for which he received a British Independent Film Award.

In the forthcoming film Fish Tank (2009) as a Royal Marines lieutenant in Inglourious Basterds (2009), as Edward Rochester in Jane Eyre's 2011 film adaptation as a sentient android closely influenced by Frank Sidebottom, and as the sentient android David 8 in Prosequious Method (2012) as an eccentric musician loosely inspired by Frank Sidebottom. Fassbender appeared in X-Men: First Class in 2011 and then went on to share the role with Ian McKellen in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) and then reprised it in X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) and Dark Phoenix (2019).

Fassbender's success as a sex addict in Shame in 2011 earned him the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival, and he was also nominated for Golden Globe and BAFTA Awards.

Edwin Epps' role as slave owner in the slavery epic 12 Years a Slave was similarly lauded in 2013, earning him his first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Fassbender appeared in another Ridley Scott film called The Counselor in 2013.

Early life

Fassbender was born in Heidelberg on 2 April 1977, the son of Northern Ireland mother Adele (from Larne) and German father Josef Fassbender. Catherine, his older sister, is a neuropsychologist at the MIND Institute in Sacramento, California, has an older brother. According to lore on his mother's side of the family, Michael Collins, an Irish king during the War of Independence, is his grandmother. Fassbender's parents moved with him to Killarney, Ireland, where his father worked as a chef. In comparison to the previous German residence's industrial backdrop, his parents selected Killarney because their children should grow up in the countryside.

Fassbender was raised Catholic and served as an altar child at the parish where his family attended. In Germany, he and his sister spent the summer holidays together. In Killarney, he attended Fossa National School near Killarney and St. Brendan's College. When he first appeared in a play, he realized he wanted to be an actor at age 17. At 19, he moved to London to study at the Drama Centre. In 1999, he dropped out of the Drama Centre and toured with the Oxford Stage Company to perform the Three Sisters. He served as a bartender, postal worker, market researcher for Royal Mail, and a Dell employee before finding steady employment as an actor.

Personal life

Fassbender is known for his secrecy, preferring to keep his personal life private. In 1996, he moved to Hackney, London, and stayed in the same apartment until he moved to Portugal in 2017.

Fassbender is fluent in German and Irish, but he said he had to brush up on his spoken German before filming Inglourious Basterds because "it was a little rusty." He has expressed an interest in appearing in a German-language film or play.

grew up as a Catholic altar-boy, but now has come out as a lapsed Catholic, though he admits he still goes to church to light candles. He is a supporter of Liverpool FC.

Fassbender told GQ magazine in June that he was dating American actress Nicole Beharie, with whom he had appeared on the 2011 film Shame. He began dating Swedish actress Alicia Vikander, with whom he had worked on the 2016 film The Light Between Oceans, in December 2014. On October 14, 2017, they married in a private ceremony in Ibiza. They later migrated to Portugal, where they later lived in Lisbon, Portugal. They have a son who was born in 2021.

In Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg's award-winning television miniseries Band of Brothers (192001), Fassbender's first film role was of Burton "Pat" Christenson. In both series of Hex on Sky One and as the main protagonist in the British band The Cooper Temple Clause's song "Blind Pilots" he appeared as Azazeal. In the video, he plays a man out with friends on a stag night that gradually turns into a goat due to wearing a cowbell necklace.

In a ten-part radio serialization of Dracula produced by BBC Northern Ireland and broadcast in the Book at Bedtime series between December 24 and December 2003, Fassbender played Jonathan Harker. He was also seen in early 2004 in a Guinness television commercial The Quarr, as a man who swims across the ocean from Ireland to apologise personally to his brother in New York; this commercial also received a gold medal at the 2005 FAB Awards.

Fassbender starred Michael Collins, his great-granduncle, in Allegiance, a play by Mary Kenny based on Collins' meeting with Winston Churchill during the 2006 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. In the prelude to X-Men, Fassbender portrayed Magneto in the superhero blockbuster X-Men: First Class. Fassbender was executive producing The Kitchen, a dystopian thriller for Netflix, in March 2022. Daniel Kaluya and Joe Murtagh's drama is being written.

"I had a big desire to go racing even before I started acting," Fassbender said in 2020. He was a fan of Formula One and Scuderia Ferrari, and he was a participant of Corso Pilota's training course in 2016.

In his first appearance at Mugello Circuit, he started racing in the Ferrari Challenge's Coppa Shell class in May 2017. He also competed in the Challenge's North American division, finishing sixth at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. He completed the 2018 Ferrari Challenge North America calendar, winning the season opener at Daytona International Speedway and placing fifth in the standings.

Fassbender joined Porsche in 2019 as part of the German Porsche Racing Experience and the subject of a Porsche YouTube video series called Road to Le Mans. He joined Proton Competition for the complete 2020 European Le Mans Series, displaying a 2017 Porsche 911 RSR with Richard Lietz and Felipe Fernandez Laser. Fassbender rode a guest car in the Porsche Supercup in Circuit de Catalunya later this year and was forced to stop the car in a startline accident that pulled him out of the championship within seconds.

Fassbender began racing with Proton Competition in the European Le Mans Series in 2021. Fassbender and his co-drivers had fourth-place finishes at the Red Bull Ring and Spa-Francorchamps before finishing second in the last run at Portimo, second behind the No. 89. Iron Lynx, the future LMGTE champion, is a 1980 Iron Lynx. With 61 points, the team came in fourth place in the LMGTE teams championship.
