Mervyn Johns Life

David Mervyn Johns (18 February 1899 – September 1992) was a Welsh film and television actor who became a British film actor during World War II.

He worked at Ealing Studios often during the war period. Mervyn Johns began working in the theatre in the 1920s and later produced his first film in 1935.

In Went the Day Well, among his hundreds of film appearances, was the church warden. Walter Craig, a mysterious architect who appeared in Dead of Night (1945), and Bob Cratchit in Scrooge (1951) with Alastair Sim. (1942) Walter Craig, the frightful architect.

In addition to being in television series such as The Avengers, The Saint, Danger Man, and Dixon of Dock Green, Johns appeared on television shows.

In over 100 film and television series, Johns was best known for his "mostly mild-mannered, lugubrious, amusing, and occasionally touching 'little boys.'

Alys Steele, the concert pianist, was his first wife.

They had one daughter, actress Glynis Johns, who was born in South Africa and appeared in The Halfway House (1944) and The Sundowners (1960).

He married actress Diana Churchill in 1976 after Alys' death in 1970.

Johns was educated at Llandovery College in Carmarthenshire, and after being educated as a medical student at London Hospital, he was encouraged by his wife to pursue a career in drama, and later attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he graduated in 1924 with a gold medal.

Mervyn Johns began his career in theatre in the 1920s and later produced his first film in 1935. The church warden in Went the Day Well is one of his hundreds of film roles.
