Mem Fox Life

Merrion Frances "Mem" Fox, AM, (born Merrion Frances Partridge on March 5, 1946) is an Australian writer and an educationalist specialising in literacy.

Fox has been semi-retired since 1996, but the company also runs seminars and lives in Adelaide, South Australia.

Personal life

Merrion Frances Partridge was born in Melbourne, Australia, but he grew up in Southern Rhodesia. Her parents were missionaries, and she attended Hope Fountain mission school in Bulawayo. When she was eighteen, she went to England and was accepted into an English Drama school.

She married Malcolm Fox, a teacher, in 1969. The following year, they returned to Australia, where Chlo Fox, a former ALP member of the South Australian Parliament, gave birth to her first child Chlo Fox in 1971.

She dislikes her given name and started using the shorter version "Mem" at the age of 13. She has never attempted to change her name legally, but for official purposes, she still refers to her name as "Merrion."

Mem Fox Career

Career

Fox decided to retrain literacy studies while still working in drama in 1981. "Literacy has become the most important part of my life," she said. She has written books on literacy that are targeted at students, their parents, teachers, and educators. She served as Associate Professor, Literacy Studies, at Flinders University until her retirement in 1996. Fox flies around the world, delivering speeches and speaking out about children's books and literacy concerns since retiring from teaching. Fox said she would probably never return to the United States again after an interrogation by US immigration officials during a trip to make a keynote address in Milwaukee in February 2017.

During a course in children's literature at Flinders University, Fox made her first draft for Possum Magic in 1978. The book was rejected by nine publishers after a five-year absence. When Omnibus Books in Adelaide accepted Fox's book Hush the Invisible Mouse by two-thirds and switch the mice to Australian animals to place emphasis on her Australian theme. Possum Magic is now one of Australia's most popular picture books, having sold over 3 million copies around the world.

Grandma Poss and Hush are the two main characters in Possum Magic. Hush has been made invisible by her Grandma to shield her from the dangers of the Australian bush. The tale chronicles the duo's travels as they tour Australia looking for the elusive key to Hush's fame. It's a synchronized tale about Australia's diverse landscapes and the animals that live in them.

The book Guess What?

After discovering one of her children's books was banned in an American province 35 years since it was first published, a well-known Australian children's author has spoken out. Hundreds of titles have been taken from school libraries since the Parent Rights in Education Act was enforced in Florida last year.
