Melody Gardot (born February 2, 1985) is an American jazz musician influenced by such blues and jazz artists as Judy Garland, Janis Joplin, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Stan Getz and George Gershwin, as well as Latin music artists like Caetano Veloso.

Early life and education
Gardot was born in New Jersey and was brought up by her grandparents. Her grandmother was a Polish immigrant. Her mother, a photographer, moved often, so they had no possessions and lived out of suitcases. Gardot studied fashion at the Community College of Philadelphia.
Personal life
Gardot is a Buddhist, macrobiotic cook, and humanitarian. She speaks fluent French in lieu of her native English and describes herself as a "citizen of the world" in place of her native English.
Music career
Gardot began playing piano in Philadelphia bars at the age of nine and began playing piano in bars on Fridays and Saturdays for four hours a night. She insisted on listening to only music she loved, including The Mamas & the Papas, Duke Ellington, and Radiohead.
During her stay in the hospital, she learned how to play the guitar and started writing songs that were later released as downloads on iTunes and published on Some Lessons: The Bedroom Sessions in 2005. She began to perform these songs at venues in Philadelphia and was discovered by staff of Radio station WXPN, which was based in Philadelphia, which helped with Norah Jones' career. She was encouraged to bring a demo tape to the radio station, but the tape eventually found its way to the Universal Music Group. Worrisome Heart, (2006), followed by My One and Only Thrill (Verve 2009), Larry Klein's first album.
