Melanie Thornton Career

Career

Thornton was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and began studying voice from the age of six, as well as learning to play the piano and clarinet. Thornton would imitate female singers she admired and listened to like Aretha Franklin and Roberta Flack on television and/or heard on radio, inspired by singers whom she adored and listened to as a child. She financed her college education with appearances in talent shows and smaller band concerts later in life. During that time, she frequented The Peacock Lounge, getting up and jam sessions as the live band welcomed people to perform.

Thornton had long aspired to be a singer, and in February 1991, she moved to Germany. Thornton had dual citizenship in Germany and the United States while her sister lived there with her US Army husband. Bob Chisolm, a singer and pianist, urged her to try the German nightclub circuit for the first time. She had been playing in a Macon, Ga., band, Danger Zone, for $50 on a good night. However, Bob Chisolm told her that on a bad night in Germany she would make $150. Thornton performed guest vocals on several dance tracks, including Orange Blue's "If You Want A (My Only)," Comic "I Surrender to Your Love"), 100%'s "Power of the Light," Trance-Vision's "Take Me 2 Heaven 2 Nite" and "How Can I" on a variety of dance shows, as well as "How Can I."

Thornton tried it out and soon found work in recording studios. Producer Frank Farian, the mastermind of Milli Vanilli's legendary 1980s duo Milli Vanilli, was attracted by her recording of "Sweet Dreams" on the radio. Farian took her under his wing, teaming her with rapper Lane McCray in the French for "The Mouth." La Bouche went on to become one of the best Eurodance companies of the 1990s, with a string of hits around the world. "Sweet Dreams" and "S.O.S. are two of their studio albums. "A Moment of Love" is the European version of "S.O.S." "All Mixed Up" is followed by a series of hits, including "Sweet Dreams," "Be My Lover," "Fallin' in Love," "I Love to Love"), "Bolingo" ("You Won't Forget Me"), "You Won't Forget Me" or "S.O.S." She would leave La Bouche in February 2000 to be replaced by Natascha Wright as the new front-woman. Thornton, La Bouche's nephew, performed guest vocals on singles including Orange Blue's "Sunshine of My Life" and "Runaway" and 100%'s "The Way It Is," as well as Le Click's debut "Tonight is the Night" in 1995.

She has signed a new contract with Sony/Epic Records. "Love How You Love Me," a ballad, was her first solo album (the CD-maxi includes a few dance remixes). Thornton appeared on RTL Spendenmarathon on November 29, 2000, and on December 1, 2010 at the Dome in Berlin. In March 2001, the sequels to "Heartbeat" and "Makin' Oooh (Talking About Love) were released. Thornton's first (and only) solo album entitled Ready to Fly was released by Sony/Epic Records on May 7, 2001. The album was released with a slew of soul and dance tracks that showcased her natural voice. On November 26, 2001, there was also a special edition of the album, which included remixed tracks and bonus songs such as the single "Wonderful Dream (Holidays Are Coming). Thornton's nickname "Melanie Thornton, formerly of La Bouche," continued to perform in the United States. In 2001, she appeared on Joy-Lab's single "Free Your Mind") "Freedom (Free Your Mind).

Thornton died in the crash of Crossair Flight 3597 near Zürich, Switzerland, on the night of November 24, 2001, at the age of 34. Thornton had performed in Leipzig and then transferred from Berlin to Zürich for forthcoming radio and TV appearances (among others, the production of "Die Bar on TV3 was cancelled) and her album "Wonderful Dream (Holidays Are Coming) (a German Coca-Cola TV commercial) and her album Ready to Fly. Thornton was laid to rest in her South Carolina home at Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

Despite Thornton's death on the eve of the holiday season, Coca-Cola decided to stick with the advertisement as planned. Every year since 2001 around Christmas time, the original commercial has been on radio in Germany, and the album has been in the German single charts every year since. It has also appeared in several other nations. La Bouche with Thornton's single "In Your Life" was released on November 25, 2002, the first anniversary of her death. Lane McCray's "in memory" dedication is included in this booklet, as well as SonyBmg/X-Cell Records' "in memory" dedication. The single has been included in the first La Bouche "Best of" collection (Credited as "La Bouche feat.) Melanie Thornton (February 21, 2002) was born in May 21, 2002. "Memories – Her Most Beautiful Ballads" – her sister's remix compilation, was released on December 1, 2003, containing her ballads and songs in acoustic ballad versions. The second La Bouche compilation "Greatest Hits" was released on April 2, 2007.
