Maximilian Alexander Chilton (born 21 April 1991) is a British racing driver who competes for Carlin Motorsport in the IndyCar Series.

He competed in Formula One, racing for Marussia F1 in 2013 and 2014.

He competed in the Marussia-backed Carlin Motorsport GP2 series in 2012. Tom, his brother, is also a racer who is competing in the British Touring Car Championship.

Early life

Chilton was born in Redhill and grew up in Reigate. Grahame Chilton, a businessman who co-owned Benfield Group until 2008, when it was bought by Aon plc for £738 million. Chilton was the vice chairman of Aon after the sale and the corporation also received around £77 million for his interest. Max Chilton attended Ardingly College from 2000 to 2008. Tom Chilton, his brother, is also a racing racer.

Career

Chilton began his racing career in karts at the age of ten, where he spent two years learning the ropes in cadet karting before progressing to junior TKM. He began to make a name for himself on the podium before committing to car racing at the age of 14. Chilton was competing in the Super 1 National Kart Championships during this time.

He ended his 2005 karting season with a season in the T Cars Championship for drivers aged between fourteen and seventeen years old. He finished eighth in his first season as a result of the Autumn Trophy's third place. He continued in T Cars in 2006, finishing second behind Luciano Bacheta by three points. He won seven races to Bacheta's six.

Chilton made his debut in the second round of the 2007 British Formula 3 season, despite being below the age of 16 to participate in the season opener and requesting special dispensation on the eve of his 16th birthday. In Bucharest and Brands Hatch, his best result was eleventh. Chilton was ineligible for points in one appearance in the Star Mazda Championship in Laguna Seca, because he was a guest driver. He and his brother Tom competed in the 2007 Silverstone game for Arena, finishing sixth overall, eight laps behind the winning Peugeot 908 HDi FAP of Nicolas Minassian and Marc Gené.

Chilton finished in eighth place in the championship in 2008 after heading to David Hayle's Hitech Racing. He earned two podiums at Monza and Rockingham, and third at Rockingham, second in the inaugural race at Oulton Park and third in the second. For the 2009 season, he rejoined Carlin Motorsport, winning three pole positions in the first four races. He won twice during the season, the first at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimo and the second in his final Formula Three race at Brands Hatch.

Chilton competed in the 2009–10 Asia Series, driving for Barwa Addax. With the highest place finish of 5th in the 2010 GP2 Series Series season championship, Chilton took over Ocean Racing Technology.

Chilton was a member of the Carlin crew in 2011 for the company's first foray into GP2, having previously driven for them in Formula Three. He finished 22nd in the Asia series and 20th in the main series, despite being partnered several times by reigning Formula Renault 3.5 Series champion Mikhail Aleshin and lvaro Parente. He stayed with the team, now with support from the Marussia Formula One team in the 2012 season, alongside Rio Haryanto. He earned his first series podium finish in Malaysia's first round of the championship, as well as his first pole position and race victory in the Hungarian feature race. Chilton's form, as well as consistent points-scoring finishes throughout the season, resulted in the team's fourth place in the drivers' championship.

In the Young Drivers Challenge at Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina Circuit in November 2011, Chilton worked for the Force India team. Following a straight-line aerodynamic test for the team earlier this year, this was his second time driving Formula One machinery.

Chilton was voted Marussia F1's testing and reserve driver for the second half of the 2012 season, beginning with the Japanese Grand Prix. Chilton took the first practice session at the 2012 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November for Marussia F1.

Chilton will compete full-time in 2013. Nikolai Fomenko, Marussia's engineering director, announced in December 2012 that Chilton will qualify for the team full time in 2013. Chilton would race the next day, according to the team. On his debut at the Australian Grand Prix, Chilton finished 20th. At the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix, he achieved his best finish of the season, finishing in 14th place after numerous retirements. In a mixed-weather session in which he was one of three drivers to go out on slick tyres at the end, he posted his best qualifying result of 16th position at the 2013 Belgian Grand Prix, where he was one of three drivers to fail on slick tyres at the end, although the track's condition was improving.

Chilton is the only racer to finish every race of his rookie season.

Chilton will be retained for the 2014 season, according to the obituaries on January 11th. Chilton finished 13th in the Australian Grand Prix, his highest finish to date. At the Bahrain Grand Prix, he came in 13th.

Chilton had won every Formula One race before the 2014 Canadian Grand Prix, putting him into a series of races in his rookie season. This was the most classified finishes in a rookie season. Lewis Hamilton holds the record for the most consecutive classification finishes at 48. On the first lap, Chilton collided with his colleagues Jules Bianchi, throwing the Frenchman into the ground at Turn 4. Following the race, Chilton earned a three-place grid penalty. After Marussia's tenure came to an end and then withdrew, Chilton skipped the last three races of the season and had no seats for 2015.

Chilton returned to Carlin for testing in order to assist them with their Indy Lights development, intending to move to a full IndyCar Series drive in 2016. Chilton's first Indy Lights pole position and race victory, which took place on the same weekend as Jules Bianchi's death, was dedicated to his former Formula One teammate and karting rival.

Chilton joined Chip Ganassi Racing in the IndyCar Series on February 1, 2016.

Chilton led 47 of the last 72 laps in the 2017 Indianapolis 500, but eventually finished fourth. With 50 laps, Chilton led the most laps overall.

Chilton will compete for Carlin Motorsport in the 2018 IndyCar Series on December 13, 2017.

Chilton will no longer be racing on oval tracks, with the exception of the Indy 500, which was announced on June 6, 2019. Conor Daly will dominate the remainder of Carlin Motorsport's Oval races for the 2019 season.

Chilton resigned from IndyCar racing in February 2022 to devote his attention to other ventures, including the Le Mans Endurance Race.

In 2015, Chilton joined Nissan Motorsports to compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship. Chilton completed the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the team before being suspended after 234 laps due to a suspension.

Chilton was designated by Ryo Michigami to be the test driver of the BUSOU Drago N Nismo GT3, which had been driven by Masataka Yanagida and Yuji Ide, and the team was placed in Endurance races for the third time during the season.
