Early life
Adler was born in Queens, New York, and the eldest son of Lisa (née Kobrin) and Doug Adler were married to a Jewish family. A year after Adler was born, his family moved to Fountain Hills, Arizona, and then to Scottsdale, Arizona. Adler was a member of the Horizon High School First Chair all-State show choir, where he performed well. After graduating, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. Jake, Adler's younger brother, was born in 1992.
Personal life
When visiting Rome in 2012, Adler proposed to his longtime girlfriend Jennifer Bronstein. On December 19, 2015, they were married. He revealed in January 2020 that they were expecting their first child together. Dylan Remington, the couple's first child, was born on March 27, 2020.
Career
Adler appeared in a minor role in the Fox television series Glee as school jock and bully Dave Karofsky, after various appearances in a variety of films. Ryan Murphy, the creator of Glee, was captivated by his performances and wanted to write more with him. Karofsky is revealed to be a closeted gay teen in the November 2010 episode "Never Been Kissed," written to address LGBT youth bullying. Adler had previously doubted his character's motives but was shocked by a scene in which Karofsky kisses the object of his bullying, openly gay student Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer). He received a warm response on Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook, saying he was "glad to represent such a large group of people." "I've received so many messages from people around the world these last two days thanking me," he said, "Whether they are Karofsky, they were Karofsky, or they know a Karofsky." The character eventually gives up his bullying and finds his peace with Kurt, but he is still closeted. Adler has been praised for his appearance in episode 3x14, "On My Way," during which he attempts suicide after his character is spoiled.
Adler has been a resident artist with The Porters of Hellsgate Theatre company in Los Angeles, and has appeared in three Shakespearean productions with them since 2008.
