Maury Chaykin Career

Career

Chaykin was known for his portrayals of blustery supporting characters. Nero Wolfe was one of his rare leading roles. Chaykin appeared in The Golden Spiders: A Nero Wolfe Mystery (2004), an A&E telefilm retelling of Rex Stout's 1953 novel. Timothy Hutton costarred in the film Archie Goodwin as Archie Goodwin. Chaykin's "undisgustled delight" at being part of the Golden Spiders' promotion: "There's an amazing billboard up on Sunset Boulevard right now, with a humongous snapshot of my face," The New York Times reported. ... I go back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. The original film's success led to the development of A Nero Wolfe Mystery, a weekly series that aired on A&E for two seasons and continues to air internationally. Chaykin and Hutton had worked together before, albeit briefly, in the 1985 film Turk 182; and then in the 2006 film Heavens Falls.

Two of Chaykin's early motion picture roles brought him national attention: computer programmer Jim Sting in WarGames and prosecution witness Sam Tipton in My Cousin Vinny. He appeared in Dances with Wolves as Major Fambrough, an Army fort commander who dies by becoming insane.

Chaykin appeared in Whale Music, a 1994 film in which he played a burned-out rock star based largely on Brian Wilson. At the 15th Genie Awards for his performance, Chaykin was named Best Actor for his role.

Chaykin appeared on the television series Seeing Things and Emily of New Moon, as well as a reprised role as the intergalactic gourmand Nerus (a nod to Nero Wolfe) in Stargate SG-1.

In Owning Mahowny, Chaykin portrayed colorful gambler Frank Perlin opposite Philip Seymour Hoffman's compulsive gambler Dan Mahowny, a film that critic Roger Ebert rated as one of the top ten best of 2003. Chaykin appeared in an episode of the Ken Finkleman miniseries At the Hotel in 2006 and received a Gemini Award for best performance by an actor in a guest role. Harvey Weinstein, a troubled film director, appeared in Entourage, a send-up of disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein. In the 2006 romantic comedy It's a Boy Girl Thing, Stan Deane, father of Kevin Zegers' character Woody Deane appeared as Stan Deane, father of Kevin Zegers' character Woody Deane.

In the first two seasons (2008–2010) of the Canadian comedy-drama television series Less Than Kind, Sam Blecher, the operator of a family-run driving school in Winnipeg, appeared as Sam Blecher, the owner of a family-run driving school in Winnipeg. The series was nominated for Best Comedy Program or Series by the Gemini Award in 2010.

"Sam is an out-of-control, generous, big-hearted individual who just can't seem to get it right with his family," Chaykin told Q radio interviewer Jian Ghomeshi in April 2010. "He's full of love, but he can't articulate it." But what he does talk about is fear, desperation, and the desire to rule, which is sadly sad." "I love him" when asked whether he liked the movie, Chaykin replied, "I love him." I do, and it's the same kind of love that a person has for their families — where you see their flaws while still accepting them because they are a part of you. Sam is certainly a part of me.

Chaykin was honoured with the ACTRA Toronto Award for Outstanding Performance — Male in Less Than Kind in 2011. In 2003, he was nominated for the honor for his portrayal of Nero Wolfe.
