Life and career

Long was born in Winchester, Kentucky, to an insurance salesman father and an assistant teacher mother. Zach is his older sibling. Lauren, his husband, met him at Western Kentucky University. He was also a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Long after graduating, he went to New York City, where he performed in various theaters. In 2004, he was cast as a leader on the critically acclaimed but short-lived The WB drama series Jack & Bobby, and later appeared in numerous television pilots and films, including Ghost Rider and Sydney White.

Long played a lead role in ABC's short-lived drama series The Deep End in 2010. Joey Baird appeared in the AMC drama series Mad Men, and in 2012, he appeared in the ABC pilot Gilded Lilys, which was created and produced by Shonda Rhimes. In a recurring role as Dr. James Peterson, Rhimes later cast him in her medical drama Private Practice. Long was cast as a lead in another ABC drama series, Lucky 7.

Long appeared as Zeke Landon during the first season of the NBC drama Manifestation in 2019, and he was moved to the main cast for season 2.
