Matt Helders Career

Career

"That was the only thing left"," the holder said. None of us played anything when we first formed the band. We just put it together. They all had guitars, and I bought a drum kit after a while." However, Helders has referred to the fact that rap music has influenced the band more than ever, saying, "We were rap followers at school longer than now, and now it still influences us in some ways; for me, it's the drums." The groove element, like foon-keh music, is included in the package. In addition, Helders cites Queens of the Stone Age as the biggest influence on his growth as a drummer, saying, "the one thing that changed me the most was seeing Queens of the Stone Age live at a festival." "When you talk to a gig and you're speaking in our normal accent, it's a little strange," the band's insistence on singing in their native Sheffield accent, "it seems a bit daft" when you burst into song as you're from California or somewhere else.

Helders has remained true to his hometown roots, suggesting that traveling around the globe makes him more appreciative of Sheffield, which also provides the basis for the band's lyrics. "And there are still plenty of things to write about around here." Touring takes you to a number of places you might not like to live in, and when you return home, it's really easy to slip into your old ways, to all the places you've never visited." "If we all go out together at nightclubbing, it's impossible, but alone you don't get recognised much." Helders also points out that despite the band's fame, he can still avoid being mobbed in the street."

His vocals have been included on several of the band's albums, making him the most versatile backing vocalist of the band. He sings in response to or in harmony with lead singer Alex Turner, and he appears on "D Is for Dangerous," "Brick by Brick," and "I.D.S.T." "You Probably Cannot See for the Lights, But You Were Staring Straight at Me," "Who the Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys?" "Teddy Picker" and "Meddy Picker."

Instead of jeans, the holders prefers playing the drums wearing a 'joggers' rather than jeans "due to mobility and sweat." "You don't want to sweat in your jeans and wear them the next day," Helders says. Anybody will remember that the name "rock and roll" is a thing. I just called it unsanitary."
