Matthew Justin Garrison (born June 2, 1970) is an American jazz bassist. He has worked at ShapeShifter Lab in Brooklyn, New York, with Fortuna Sung.

Matthew Garrison, the New York Times' narrator, has toured with Herbie Hancock as having "raised the bar" for electric bass players.

Garrison toured with R&B singer Whitney Houston on her Nothing but Love World Tour in 2010. He is one of the most technically gifted jazz musicians of his generation.

Early life and pre-solo career

Jimmy Garrison's uncle (bassist with Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane) and modern dancer Roberta Escamilla Garrison spent a majority of his childhood in Rome, Italy. He returned to the United States in 1988 to live with his godfather Jack DeJohnette, with whom he sang. He began playing professionally in 1989 and attended Berklee College of Music in Boston on a scholarship. In 1994, he moved to New York City, where he performed and recorded with Gary Burton, Rashied Ali, Ravi Coltrane, Gil Evans Orchestra, Steve Coleman, Chaka Khan, Joni Mitchell, Joseph Mitchell, John McLaughlin, John Scofield, Mike Stern, and Wayne Krantz.
