Matt Bowen Life

Matthew Jeremy Bowen (born 9 March 1982) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who competed in the 2000s and 2010s.

He competed in the National Rugby League for Australia, the North Queensland Cowboys, with whom he set the club's record for most games and the Wigan Warriors, an Australia international and Queensland State of Origin representative fullback.

In the 2005 and 2007 seasons, Bowen was the best try-scorer in the NRL.

Bowen, a former Queensland and Australian captain, has been described as a "little freak" by Darren Lockyer, blaming his experience and dynamism.

Phil Gould, a two-time premiership winner, remarked in 2005 that he was a "modern-day icon of the game," adding that "Bowen has unique football instincts."

He does the difficult with ease, and some of his feats have redefined what we once thought was impossible."

Personal life

Bowen was born in Cairns to Richard and Lillian Bowen, and he has four brothers (Wendell, Esmond, Dwayne and Stanton) and a sister (Dellece). Brenton Bowen, Bowen's cousin, played with him at the Cowboys from 2003 to 2007, before he joined the Gold Coast Titans in 2008. Javid Bowen, Bowen's nephew, is currently a member of the Cowboys' NRL team. Rex Liddy, another of Bowen's nephews, competed for the Gold Coast Suns in 2011.

Bowen is married to Rudie Doyle, the niece of former teammate John Doyle. Diaz and Tatum, who were born the night before Bowen played in the 2015 Super League Grand Finals, and Matthew Jr. are the couple's two children.

Matt Bowen Career

Playing career

Bowen played in Round 1 of the 2001 NRL season against Queensland's Brisbane Broncos, losing 17-18 at Dairy Farmers Stadium. In Round 9 against the Canberra Raiders, he scored his first NRL goal before being dismissed from the bench again in a 26–34 loss.

Bowen played 15 games in his rookie season, scoring six times and kicking one goal. Bowen played his main position of fullback for the final seven games of the season after spending time on the bench and at five-eighth. Bowen was selected at halfback for the Junior Kangaroos, as well as future Cowboys teammates Dallas Johnson, Micheal Luck, and Brent Tate.

Bowen vacated the position at the start of the 2002 NRL season for the Cowboys' captain, who was the team's captain at the time, despite finishing 2001 as the team's starting fullback. Bowen was seated on the wing in Round 1, a game in which the Brasher will succumb to injury once more, despite vacating the fullback position. Bowen played five-eighth in the Cowboys' loss to the Broncos in Round 2, before taking over the fullback job for the first time a week later. Bowen had a breakout season in 2002, scoring 12 tries in 24 games, including a series of five games in which he scored a try.

Bowen made his international debut in 2003 when he was called up to the Queensland team for Game II of the State of Origins series. As Queensland lost the series, he appeared for 16 minutes as a replacement. He was drafted again for Game III of the series, after coming off the bench in Queensland's 36–6 victory.

In the Cowboys' 60–8 victory over the South Sydney Rabbitohs in Round 24, Bowen played 20 NRL games, including his first NRL hat-trick.

For the first time in 2004, the Cowboys participated in the finals series, with Bowen playing a vital role in the team's victory one match shy of their first Grand Final. He scored 11 goals, including one in the Cowboys' first ever finals game, defeating the Canterbury Bulldogs 30–22. Bowen played for Queensland in 2004, winning his first Origin game and scoring his first Origin attempt in the Maroons' Game III loss.

Bowen was selected in the Australian Kangaroos squad for the Tri-Nations series at the end of the season. He played fullback in a tour match against Cumbria, scoring a point but not in the Tri-Nations series, with Anthony Minichiello preferring fullback. However, after the Tri-Nations series, he made his Test debut against France in Carcassonne, which Australia won 52-31. In a non-Test exhibition match against the United States in Philadelphia, on the touring squad's return to Australia, he scored three tries.

In 2005, halfback Johnathan Thurston joined the Cowboys in a move that would have a major impact on not only the team but also Bowen's career. Bowen and Thurston will form one of the competition's most unpredictable pairings over the next nine seasons. The Cowboys made it to the 2005 NRL Grand Finals, first for Thurston and Bowen. Despite Bowen scoring the first try, the Wests Tigers lost by 30-16 to the Wests Tigers. Bowen's 21 attempts in 2005 made him the competition's top try scorer.

Bowen was once more selected for Queensland in the 2005 State of Origin series. He was the game-breaker in Game I of the series. He intercepted a pass from New South Wales half-back Brett Kimmorley and ran 40 meters to score in a golden point extra time, effectively winning the game for Queensland after being off the bench in the second half. Bowen would also score in the second and third games of the series, although Queensland lost both games and lost the series. For the first time in his career, he was chosen in Queensland's starting lineup in the third match, displaceing Billy Slater.

Bowen and the Cowboys struggled to capitalize on their growth from the previous season in 2006, finishing eighth on the ladder and missing the finals series. Bowen was in Game I of the 2006 State of Origin series, but was kicked from Queensland's side for Game II. In 24 games for the Cowboys, he scored five goals, one of his lowest season tallies of his career.

Bowen had his most enjoyable individual season in 2007. He regained his best try scorer's title with 22 tries, while still making the most line breaks (32) and tackle breaks (220) in the NRL. He rejoined the Queensland squad for Game III of the State of Origin series, and the Cowboys returned to the NRL finals, placing third on the ladder. For the first and only time in his career, he was named Player of the Year by his peers and named Fullback of the Year at the 2007 Dally M Awards. He has since signed a new deal with the Cowboys to remain in the league through the 2011 season, with his coach Graham Murray claiming he was the "best fullback in the game."

Despite the accolades he earned during the year, Bowen was controversially dropped from the Kangaroos team to face New Zealand at the end of the season, when Brett Stewart and Kurt Gidley were preferred at fullback. Bowen's insignificance was a factor in his decision, according to Kangaroos' coach Ricky Stuart, who argued that his absence was a factor in his disqualification. Wendell Sailor, a former dual-code international, argued that selectors were correct to have Bowen leave the national team, implying that his playing experience in club football had not been replicated at State of Origins.

Bowen started the 2008 NRL season slowly, missing Rounds 4 and 5 due to a left knee injury. In Round 6 against the Warriors, he scored three tries. Bowen's knee injury was recovered three weeks later and he was out of action for the remainder of the season. North Queensland finished 15th on the NRL ladder without him.

Bowen recovered from his knee injury in the 2009 pre-season. He had 20 games before breaking his right knee in August in the same way that he had injured his left knee earlier this season. A second round of surgery followed, leaving him out for the remainder of the season and the beginning of the next.

The Cowboys were in last year of a difficult 2010 NRL season, finishing 15th on the ladder. Bowen missed half of the season due to knee surgery he had in 2009, making his NRL debut in the Cowboys' Round 9 victory over the Sydney Roosters. Bowen played his 200th game for the Cowboys in Round 26, defeating the Roosters by four months. Bowen completed the 2010 season with a career low of two attempts. Despite the poor season, Bowen was chosen in the Prime Minister's XIII team that met Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby.

Bowen returned to his best form in 2011 after scoring 8 tries in 25 games. He reached another milestone early this season by defeating former teammate Paul Bowman's record for the most NRL games by a Cowboys player. The Cowboys had a good season, finishing seventh on the ladder and returning to the finals series. Bowen was then again selected for the Prime Minister's XIII team at the end of the season. Bowen stayed with the Cowboys for a season through 2013, citing his "love" for the team and his desire to be closer to his extended family. He had considered competing offers to play in England. He was shortlisted for the Rugby League International Federation's Fullback of the Year award after the season.

Bowen reached a 250-game record in the Cowboys' first home elimination final since 2007, defeating the Broncos 33–16. In 2012, he had 28 try assists, more than the team's halfback Johnathan Thurston (25), and he was Queensland's 18th man for Queensland in Game III of the 2012 State of Origins series. Bowen finished second in the Dally M Medal tally with 26 points at the end of the year and was a finalist for Dally M Fullback of the Year. He finished 2012 with 13 tries, his most in a season since 2007.

Bowen's last season with the Cowboys will be in 2013. Bowen revealed on August 30 that he would leave the club at the end of the season. Bowen played 19 games and scored six tries in his final NRL season. Bowen played his last home game at 1300SMILES Stadium in Round 26, his last home game. After his team's 50-22 victory over the Wests Tigers, in which Bowen scored two goals, he was chaired from the field by his teammates. He appeared in the Cowboys' elimination final loss to the Cronulla Sharks at Allianz Stadium a week later.

Bowen's signing as a back-up for injured fullback Sam Tomkins was revealed on September 24th.

In Round 1 of the 2014 Super League season, Bowen's first match for Wigan was against Huddersfield. The Wigans lost 8-24. Bowen returned to Australia two weeks later and competed in Wigan's 14-36 World Club Challenge loss to the Sydney Roosters. Bowen finished his first season in England with 15 attempts from 24 games, including a hat-trick against the Hunslet Hawks in the Challenge Cup, despite a slow start to his Wigan career.

Bowen re-signed with Wigan until the end of 2015. In the loss to St Helens at Old Trafford, Wigan reached the 2014 Super League Grand Final, and Bowen played at full throttle.

Bowen was Wigan's first pick fullback when the 2015 Super League season began. In Wigan's 12-14 World Club Series loss, Bowen met his old friends, the Brisbane Broncos, for the final time two weeks.

Bowen will not be offered or a new deal on July 7, according to Wigan. Bowen took over Wigan's goalkicking duties towards the end of the season, kickin 31 goals and scoring 9 tries in his final season.

Bowen's last match was the 2015 Super League Grand Final, in which he scored a try and kicked four goals in Wigan's 20–22 loss to the Leeds Rhinos at Old Trafford, meaning that he ended his career with a third Grand Final loss.

Bowen played in the 2016 NRL Auckland Nines Tournament, returning to the North Queensland Cowboys as the club's final farewell to the club and his playing career.

In Round 11 of the Intrust Super Cup, Bowen will sign with the Townsville Blackhawks, his first appearance for the club in Round 12. In Round 13, the Blackhawks defeated the North Devils 32-32, scoring a point and setting up another two others.

The Cowboys went from NRL laughing stock to premiership candidates in an incredible inside look at how they went from NRL laughing stock to premiership candidates

North Queensland is a fiercely parochial rugby league region. As the current crop of men from the north prepare to face Parramatta for a place in the NRL grand final, the work establishing that passion and DNA can be revealed - including the work the Cowboys players themselves did to build their own stadium just to compete
