Early life
Matthew Jerome Barr was born in Allen, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, to Mike Barr, a retired football coach at Purdue University and Southern Methodist University who now work in real estate, and DeDe Barr, a portrait artist. Luke, Barr's younger brother, and Sara are the sister of Sara. Barr and his family immigrated to Fairview, Texas, another Dallas suburb.
Barr was active in the Allen High School drama program and appeared in numerous school plays and musical theater productions. This included Tommy in Meredith Willson's The Music Man, as well as a judicial novice in the school's madrigal dinner.
Barr, a high school senior, learned that Richard Linklater was directing a film about football in Austin, Texas, which is Friday Night Lights. He auditioned for a role. Despite the fact that this film was postponed for another two years and Linklater was replaced by Peter Berg as director, Barr made some good impressions. In the late spring and early summer of 2002, producer Ann Walker Mclay, Linklater, and collaborator and director Clark Lee Walker all agreed to play him.
Barr moved to Los Angeles, where his first acting role on the television show ER was shot half a year after the filming of Levelland ended in January 2003.
