Early life and education
Knowles was born in Gadsden, Alabama, the son of Lou Helen Knowles (née Hogue) and Matthew Q. Knowles (December 30, 1996). He earned both a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. From Cornerstone Christian Bible College, he has an MBA in Strategic Planning and Organizational Culture.
Personal life
In 1980, Knowles married Tina Knowles. She filed for divorce in 2009 and then refiled in August 2011 citing "discord or personality clash" as the reason for the deterrent. In November 2011, the divorce was finalized. Gena Avery, a former model, married him on June 30, 2013.
Knowles revealed in October 2019 that he had been diagnosed with male breast cancer.
Career
Knowles began his career in the selling of office and medical equipment. He came from Houston in 1976 and spent ten years with the Xerox Corporation, mainly in the medical-systems sales division. Knowles practiced CT/MRI diagnostic imaging services to hospitals and health care centers. He has also worked in neurosurgical sales. Knowles left this career in 1992 to devote himself to his music company, Music World Entertainment, which he founded the year.
Knowles has released several recording imprints under Music World Entertainment, including Music World Gospel, Music World Kids, and Music World Country/Comparre. Knowles has worked with Sony Music, Interscope/Geffen/A&M, Fontana/Universal, Integrity Africa, Fontana International, and Sony Brazil, among other things.
Knowles took over as the head of Destiny's Children, either as a producer or an executive producer on several of the company's projects. Destiny's Child under Music World Artist Management became a top-selling company, winning numerous accolades, including the Grammy Award, the American Music Award, BET Awards, and several others. The group was inducted into the All Time Hot 100 Artists by Billboard magazine. Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland, both worked as professionals on the careers of Destiny's Children, Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland. LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson were both sued by Knowles, alleging that he misappropriated group funds.
Knowles founded Spirit Rising Music in 2002, which later became Music World Gospel. Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Brian Courtney Wilson, Juanita Bynum, Le'Andria Johnson, Micah Stampley, Amber Bullock, Andrea Helms, Trinitee 5:7, and Elder Goldwire feature artists. Knowles acquired the country music catalog Compadre in 2016, which includes James McMurty, Johnny Cash, Billy Joe Shaver, Trent Willmon, and Kate Campbell. Mathew Knowles' first book, "The DNA Of Achievers: The 10 Traits of Highly Profitable Professionals," was published in October 2015.
