Career
Masta Killa, a native of Brooklyn, New York City, was the last member of the Wu-Tang Clan to participate in the Wu-Tang Clan's debut single "Protect Ya Neck"; he did not appear on the group's debut single "Protect Ya Neck." He was also the first person not to be a rapper at the time of the organization's inception. During his early days with the GZA, he was heavily mentored by the organization, as shown by the company's common flow. He derived his rap name from the 1978 kung fu film Shaolin Master Killer (Shao Lin san shi liu fang). In the closing verse to "Da Mysterious Chessboxin," Masta only appeared on one track on Wu-Tang Clan's first album. Masta only made it to the track, and was almost dropped in favor of Killah Priest. Killah Priest on the No Said Date DVD claims that he and Masta Killa were competing for the position on "Master of Chessboxin'" and although Killah Priest did not sleep, Masta Killa stayed up all night writing and Killa Priest woke up the next morning to Masta Killa's verse. Masta Killa was still developing his abilities as a rapper during the time when Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) was being written. Since the other members of Wu-Tang were much more familiar, his verse from "Da Mysteries of Chessboxin" was the only thing Masta Killa had written, and it was fine tuned to match the rest of the members' verses.
He made several appearances on Wu-Tang hits, including "Winter Warz," "Duel of the Iron Mic," and "Glaciers of Ice" during the first round of solo projects. In comparison to members such as Inspectah Deck and Ghostface Killah's more masculine, forceful designs, his flow at the time attracted attention for being stifled and laid back. Masta Killa is also the Clansman with a fondness for Chinese martial arts imagery. Masta became a mainstay in the Wu-Tang Clan's second album Wu-Tang Forever in 1997, with regular appearances throughout the series.
Masta Killa was the first member of the Wu-Tang Clan to perform solo after being postponed for many years and then unveiled in June 2004 under the banner No Said Date; it was eventually published in June 2004 as the group's best-selling album, praised for including every main member of the Wu-Tang Clan on the album after a period in the company's history that lacked unity. Made in Brooklyn, Pete Rock and MF Doom's second album, made in Brooklyn, was released on August 8, 2006. In March 2006, the Bronze Nazareth-produced lead single from the album "Ringing Bells" was released.
In December 2012, he released Selling My Soul, an LP with heavy soul grooves and guests, including Kurupt and late Ol' Dirty Bastard. The album was intended to be a precursor to his long-awaited album Loyalty is Royalty, first revealed in 2010 and then released in 2017.
