Maryla Jonas Life

Maryla Jonas (May 31, 1911 – July 3, 1959), a Polish-born classical pianist who later migrated from Nazism to Brazil and later the United States, was born in Poland. Jonas was born in Warsaw, Poland, and she debuted her pianistic abilities at the age of 9. * Despite Jonas' father's misgivings about a piano career, Jonas studied with Polish pianist Ignacy Jan Paderewski as a fellow pupil of Witold Malcuzynski and Halina Czerny-Stefanska and made her debut with the Warsaw Philharmonic in 1920. * Jonas' adult career began in 1926 with a tour of various European capitals beginning in Germany. * Her touring career was fruitful, paving the way for her 13th place finish in the second International Chopin Piano Competition in 1932. * Alexander Uninsky won the first prize in the same competition. * In 1933, Jonas received the Beethoven Prize of Vienna and began a fruitful European tour pianist career. * She declined the invitation of a Gestapo agent to Berlin and perform in a safer environment. * As a result, Jonas was arrested and detained for several weeks. * A German officer who had once seen her perform in Germany took pity on her and had her released. * The German officer urged Jonas to fly to Berlin and visit the Brazilian Embassy for assistance. * Jonas took the German officer's advise and travelled to Berlin on foot, running several hundred miles short of food and without access to safe shelter. * Jonas' long walk to Berlin is likely to have severely harmed her health, as well as her untimely death at the age of 48. The embassy gave Jonas false information indicating she was the wife of the Ambassador's son. Jonas travelled from Berlin to Lisbon and then settled in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's capital. * While living in Brazil, Jonas suffered a nervous breakdown and lived for many months in sanatoria in 1940. *When it seemed she was on the mend, she received the devastating news that one of her brothers had been killed; this was followed by the announcement that her husband and parents had also died. * These painful losses, as well as her promising as a pianist, made her chances as a pianist seem unlikely. * Jonathanas' sister and Arthur Rubinstein, another well-known Polish pianist, extended their assistance to Jonas, encouraging her to return to performing and recording piano music. * She resumed her pianoic career in New York City, making her Carnegie Hall debut in February, 1946.
