Mary Catherine McCormack (born February 8, 1969) is an American actress.

She has appeared in the series Murder One (1995–97), as Margaret Shannon in In Plain Sight (2008–12), and as Peggy in the comedy series The Kids Are Alright (2018–19). Private Parts (1997), Deep Impact (1998), True Crime (1999), K-PAX (2001), Dickie Roberts, Former Child Star (2003), and 1408 (2007).

Early life

McCormack was born in Plainfield, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Norah's medical assistant and car dealer, as well as ice cream parlor owner William McCormack. In 1990, her parents divorced. Bridget is the Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court and a former law professor at the University of Michigan Law School, and she is the United States Supreme Court Chief Justice. William O'Connor, an actor, writer, and producer who has appeared on In Plain Sight as FBI agent Robert O'Connor.

McCormack graduated from Edison, New Jersey, in 1987, having attended the Ward Law-Hartridge School. She received her BA in comparative arts, focusing on drawing and creative writing from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1991.

Personal life

McCormack married director and producer Michael Morris in July 2003. They have three children, Lillian Morris born in 2011, Rose Morris born in 2005, and Margaret Morris born in 2004.

McCormack and Morris are executive producers of the game show 25 Words or Less, which is hosted by Meredith Vieira. McCormack, as well as fellow executive producers Lisa Kudrow and Dan Bucatinsky, are also a regular celebrity panelist on the show.

McCormack is the godmother of In Plain Sight co-star Fred Weller's daughter.

Career

McCormack began performing in Gian Carlo Menotti's Christmas opera Amahl and the Night Visitors at the age 12. She continued her stage appearances in musicals and completed an acting program at the William Esper Studio. She has appeared in several New York theater productions, including The Atlantic Theater Company, Alice's 4th Floor, and Naked Angels, where she appeared in Jon Robin Baitz's A Fair Country.

McCormack portrayed Justine Appleton on Murder One (1995–1997) and also appeared in the HBO series K Street, which lasted for only ten episodes. In 1997, she appeared in Howard Stern's film Private Parts. McCormack appeared on The West Wing in 2004 as Deputy National Security Advisor and ex-CIA officer Kate Harper. Her character was soon to be a regular presence and stayed for three seasons until the show's conclusion.

In Plain Sight, McCormack appeared on the USA Network series In Plain Sight. She portrayed Mary Shannon, a deputy United States marshal stationed at the Federal Witness Protection Program's Albuquerque, New Mexico, office, also known as the Federal Witness Protection Program (WITSEC). The program was revived for its fourth and fifth seasons in 2011 and 2012. The show came to an end in 2011, making it its fifth season. McCormack was portrayed as the lead in Kari Lizer's untitled comedy pilot on ABC after it came to an end.

McCormack was nominated for the Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play for the role of Gretchen in Boeing's 2008 Broadway revival.

McCormack appeared on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson seven times as a guest. She treated host Craig Ferguson with a special coffee mug shaped as a rattlesnake from the American International Rattlesna Museum in Albuquerque's third visit in 2009. Ferguson promised to use this mug on all future shows and kept his promise. He donated the mug back to the museum after his last show.

McCormack reunited with the cast of The West Wing in 2012 to film a video that served both as a reminder that voters should vote for non-partisan candidates as they cast their ballots and as a video promoting McCormack's eventual judicial candidacy for the Michigan State Supreme Court.

McCormack began filming scenes for The Crash (previously titled 'A Conspiracy on Jekyll Island,') in October 2013. Aram Rappaport's film is directed by Aram Rappaport and produced by Hilary Shor, Atit Shah, and Aaron Becker. On January 13, 2017, the film was released in North America as a direct-to-VOD and limited edition.

McCormack appeared in the Amazon.com exclusive An American Girl Story (2005), as Maryellen Alyn Lind, who portrayed the title character.

McCormack appeared on ABC's The Kids Are Alright as the Catholic family matriarch Petra Clary. After one season, ABC cancelled the program.
