Life and career

Humes was born at Mercy Hospital in Watertown, New York. In the 1974 Miss New York State competition, she attended Watertown High School ('72) and competed as Miss Thousand Islands. She won the Miss Florida USA pageant and was the third runner up in the 1975 Miss USA pageant behind eventual winner and fellow actress Summer Bartholomew of California.

Humes made her big screen debut as the Vestal Virgin Miriam in Mel Brooks' comedy film History of the World, Part I, 1981. Later Aaron Spelling cast her in the action-adventure series Velvet with Leah Ayres, Shari Belafonte, and Sheree J. Wilson. Humes appeared on many television shows over the 1980s, including The Dukes of Hazzard, The Love Boat, The A-Team, The Fall Guy, and T.J. Hooker. She appeared as the mother of lead character in the short-lived NBC series Eerie, Indiana, from 1991 to 1992. Perry Mason: The Case of the Reckless Romeo, 1992-1996, and later appeared in Matlock (three times in different roles) Diagnosis: Murder, In the Heat of the Night and Murphy Brown.

Humes appeared in Dawson's Creek's mother Gail Leery from 1998 to 2003. Humes appeared in a number of shows, including Grey's Anatomy, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and Criminal Minds, as well as a number of Hallmark Channel television shows after Dawson's Creek.
