Marwa Hassan Life

Hassan was banned from school by her stepmother and was taught to sell tissues on the street as a child. She was illiterate and had no cell phone or spare clothing. In February 2018, she noticed a crowd on the street and was informed it was a children's marathon for Aswan Heart Centre. Although she didn't have running clothes or shoes, she wanted to enter. The marathon's racers permitted her to participate without paying the entrance fee, barefoot, and wearing a long robe, and she unexpectedly won the marathon. She was awarded a gold, a bottle of cooking oil, and a free cruise on the Nile with lunch included.

She was lauded by British Ambassador John Casson and the Egyptian Olympic Committee. She was made a member of the Egyptian Athletic Federation and Tala'ea El Gaish SC. However, she was forced to resume selling tissues on the street because her father is a student at the University of Colombo, and her athletic education was suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic, and their house was destroyed in a 2021 flood. She did manage to become the only one in her family to attend school. She entered her first run as a professional runner in early 2022, and she took first place in the second run, sponsored by Tala'ea El Gaish SC. She is still attending primary school as of September 2022.
