Martin Steven Lewis OBE (born 9 May 1972 in Manchester, England) is an English journalist and television presenter.

Early life and education

Lewis was born in 1972 at Withington Hospital in Manchester. His family lived in Didsbury, Manchester. As a child, he and his family moved to Norley, Coventry, where his father was appointed headmaster of Delamere Forest School, a Jewish school for students with special educational needs. Susan Lewis, his mother, died after a horse riding accident involving a collision with a lorry when he was 11 years old. He became a patron of Grief Encounter, a children's bereavement charity, and an advocate for life insurance in later life.

Lewis attended The King's School, an independent school in Chester. Lewis has said that he was exposed to anti-Semitism as a school boy in Chester, remarking that he was one of only two Jewish boys in his year, he was branded "Jew" by other students. He went on to study Government and Law at the London School of Economics, and later became a postgraduate student in Broadcast Journalism at Cardiff University's Centre for Journalism Studies in 1997. He was given an honorary doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Chester in 2013.

Personal life

Lewis has a sister, and his mother was killed after a horse riding crash in Chester on May 7th, 1984. Lewis married Lara Lewington, a 5 News weather presenter, on May 31, 2009. They have one daughter. Lewis is Jewish and practices the Jewish faith. As of 2021, The Sunday Times Rich List places his net worth at £123 million.

Lewis was the general secretary of the LSE Students' Union after graduating. He then moved to London for the Brunswick Group, a financial communications consultancy firm.

Lewis became a producer for the BBC Business Unit based in Cardiff and also as an editor of BBC Radio 4's Today programme business slot. Lewis then transferred to Simply Money, fronted by Angela Rippon, where he cultivated his "Money Saving Expert" persona. Poor viewing figures were present at the start of the show, and the channel's main backer, Invest TV Resources, pulled their funding in March 2001. Almost all of the company's 51 workers, including Lewis, have lost their jobs.

Lewis contributed to a "Deale of the Week" column in the Sunday Express after the firm's demise of Simply Money. On Channel 5's daytime show "Open House with Gloria Hunniford, Lewis also spoke on "Money Saving Expert" slots. Lewis returned to the BBC to work as a business and personal finance reporter for the corporation's BBC One Breakfast News. Lewis produced Make Me Rich, a daytime television series on ITV, and It Pays to Watch, a peak time show on Five in 2008. Lewis has also appeared on television's Tonight and has appeared as a "Money Saving Expert" on several other magazine shows, including Good Morning Britain and Lorraine.

Lewis is currently on television's This Morning and as an occasional guest on other news and magazine shows. He began co-presenting The Martin Lewis Money Show in 2012, first with Saira Khan and then with Angellica Bell. He appeared on BBC's Radio Five Live Weekly as he appeared on Emma Barnett's Show On BBC's Radio Five Live, he appeared every week. He appeared on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs in June 2020.

For the first time, Martin appeared on the Meridian Trust's (now Public Service Broadcasting Trust) live Spotlight Program "Save yourself a fortune" on ITV Meridian as their Money Saving Expert. The programme received the Royal Television Society Educational Award later this year – 2002 Campaigns and Seasons.

Lewis founded and operates MoneySavingExpert.com, which was originally intended to cost only £100 in February 2003. He sold the website to the Moneysupermarket.com group in September 2012 for up to £87 million, but remained editor-in-chief. Lewis received £35 million cash up front in comparison to 22.1 million shares in Moneysupermarket.com and £27 million in future payments. He also revealed his intention to donate £10 million to charity, of which £1 million will go to Citizens Advice.

Lewis sold just over half of his Moneysupermarket.com, which was acquired in the auction of Money Saving Expert for £25.2 million in July 2015. On the back of this, he gave Citizens Advice and the Personal Finance Education Group a further £1 million each to fund financial literacy and education research. Lewis took legal action against Facebook in 2018 after defamation of fake advertisements featuring his face and name, mainly in favor of "bitcoin" and "investing." After Facebook agreed to fund an anti-scam campaign, he cancelled the lawsuit.

Lewis has a fortnightly column in The Yorkshire Post and a regional syndicated column in The Manchester Evening News and the Express & Star, among others. He has been a columnist for The Sunday Times, News of the World, The Guardian, and the Sunday Express. All of his columns are based on the principle of saving money.
